Can anyone recommend a good insurance company/broker for Jap Imports.

Can't believe the quote I had today for an FTO - and I'm over 40

Also anyone know what a Cat 1 Alarm should comprise? The car I am looking at has a TOAD alarm with immobiliser.

Try Adrian Flux, Elephant and Tescos.

The Toad alarm should be Thatcham Cat 1, but the insurance company will want to see the certificate that is given to you when the system is purchased.

Thanks for that - will have a go with the insurance companies mentioned.

I am buying the car secondhand so will need to check about the Alarm.

I have my Skyline (group 20)Insured thru Warwick Davies,(Norwich Union)-best price I could get, for the legalised robbery that insurance is .
I also have a cat1 Toad alarm (model A1-606) it seems pretty good,Thatcham coding is a quality scale which is recognised by most insurance companies.Group 1(best)is built to a wiring& tamper proof standard which will include ;imobiliser, multiple point entry sensors(boot, doors, bonnet etc).
My car was broken into recently, alarm woke me.Also even if you open the car with supplied key fob thingy,it will imobilise itself after 90 secs if not started-even if you use the correct key!.Unit is modular so you can add more features ,i.e.microwave/proximity alarm etc.The insurance co will insist that its professionally fitted (some will insist on a tracker too if your car is 'desireable' enough!)& will want to see a certificate.Hope this is of some help.
Have alook at these links for more info:

It is a group 20 car, usual Cat 1 alarm, garaging helps.

What was your quote?
£1,250 with the AA - my current insurance group - but I did have one a few months ago for £550.

Car wont be garaged - it will be on the drive at the back of the house. The TVR gets the garage.

Mrs Slinky (who just so happens to work for A-Plan!) recommends giving the Thatcham branch of A-Plan a call on 01635 874646..

They deal soley with Jap/Grey-Imports and should be quite competitive!

HTH,

Slinky (and Mrs S of course!)

I found some "import specialists" to cost multiples of Admiral etc

Last couple of years I used Admiral or Privilege but just this week got a quote from www.firstalternative.co.uk which is about 30% cheaper than my current premium.

FWIW I'm 31, live in London with 4yrs NCD and have a Supra Mk IV

Thanks for your help guys. Managed to get a quote for £537 from the nice lads at Adrian Flux. Others ranged from £630 to over £1k

Now - next question. If the car is fitted with a Toad alarm and immobliser but the owner has lost the certificate - which is needed for the insurance - any ideas how to get a copy?

Have you bought the car btw?
Pick it up the first weekend in September I am sooooooooooo excited I am going to explode.

Managed to get the exact specification I wanted - model, colour, leather interior. Paintwork is a little tatty but I am well chuffed.

Cheers - must admit I wasn't looking to buy for another couple of months - but saw this late model FTO and knew I had to have it.

Anyone want to buy a Nova?

Got it up for sale in classifieds

Just had an interim service as well. Cam belt changed 10,000 miles ago. Will be really sorry to see it go actually.
