S2000 newbie question

Congratulations - enjoy. Can't help you with what the best upgrades are, but if you have a look here: www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showforum=25 you should find everything you need to know.
Breathing mods are a good starting point for any car.
You MAY see an increase of upto 20+bhp even if actual power gains are'nt that great engine should be more responsive & generally 'perform' better.
PowerFlow will make you a good quality, bespoke s/s exhaust. If you go for the 'big name' brands such as HKS,Apexi etc they're often very expensive & IMHO the quality of joint welding/steel grades are not always too hot.A de-cat will give a little extra oomph & noise, but remember you'll need to replace the old cat converters at MOT time.Air filters/induction kits will help at the 'sucking' end, cone shaped type are very popular & easy to fit,tho a lot of die-hards swear by uprated panel filters (which go straight into your existing air box) & are much cheaper. Grab a couple of auto catalogues to see the bewildering choice.Try www.potn.com
Modding cars can be seriously addictive & should carry a Govt health warning-be prepared to fall out with your bank manager.
What ever you decide-enjoy the car.

Not on an S2000 you wont. Theyre pretty highly tuned right from the factory which is good for stock cars but bad if you want to modify them.
A full exhaust if you do it correctly youll get a couple of hp. If you put the wrong pieces in it its possible to even lose power
Good luck, just do lots of research before you go ahead

I agree, no way will you see 20hp increase on an S2000 just with an intake/ exhaust.
Widely regarded as the best CAI is the Mugen carbon fibre airbox, very expensive (anything up to £1000) but high quality. There's a potential group buy in progress on the S2ki UK forum, we're hoping to get a sub £700 price.
As for exhausts, again you won't see huge (if any) gains, but the Amuse full titanium system is supposed to be very good, expect to pay anything up to £1500. The Mugen titanium/ stainless mix is also very good, price is similar.
The main gains you will see are in the torque curve, rather than outright power and in throttle response. Oh, and the in the noise
If you want significantly more power there are several supercharger kits, these cost a few grand and you can say goodbye to your warranty, but you can expect 300+hp.
Good luck with the car, had mine almost 3 months now and loving every minute
Not an S2000 owner but have been keen on them in the past.
Are there light wieght kits available? That would help the car out loads IMO.
Can panels and interior fittings be changed for lighter wieght components?
I suppose it depends on what you want from the car but there maybe a amarket out there for these parts.
I guess the SPOON type cars already go for the Carbon panels but they must be very pricey.
Do S2000s have a spare wheel?
If so, Id recommend leaving it at home as the first wieght saver.

Extra breathing will help any engine I reckon.
So what if it doesent give you amny BHPs? It might just feel a whole lot better.
Also it might add nothing more than better sound, and better sound adds so so much to the driving experience.
The CRX mods I did made it sound fantastic under acceleration but just as quiet as standard for normal driving. It meant I didnt have that boy racer image.

There's lots of CF parts you can get, C-West do a full dry carbon fibre replacement kit for all the panels but it's very, very expensive.

I didnt catagorically state 20bhp gain.I'm not a2000 owner either.I still think-for a beginner-breathing mods are a good starting point,if well researched & implemented. Also a good way to start to get to know a new engine, without 'cracking it open' or anything else too adventurous.
Totally agree.
I've had mine just over a year now.
I track it, tour in it, use it for shopping trips and B&Q trips! Although there are certain circumstances where it would be better if it had more power further down' / to be closer to the floor / springs to be stiffer, I have taken a choice to leave it as Honda intended.
The reason is that Honda have employed a lot of experts to set the car up for the best of all situations (including reliability) and I think dicking with it is going against that very expensive research & development. For example, some people say its too hard, but I think its too soft - I could tighten it up, but then probably wouldn't like it over speed bumps. There are power upgrades, but then how would it be around town? I'm sure there are lots of opinions out there, but are these opinions of a Honda engineer who worked on the R&D?
As it is, its a VERY comfortable car with lots of luxury bits. On B roads its very rewarding and always reminds me how much I like it.. and then on the track it can be a different animal and gives all thats needed. Lets face it - at 240bhp its enough for 99% of us! Would any of us actually be able to tell if it had 260?
Considering how much effort the EXPERTS put into making this such a good package - isn't it better to take the experts advice and just leave it alone?
My take anyway! Anyway I think mine is utterly fab and here are a few pictures of it!

All good points Pikey. They spent years of experts researching it so what makes people think they can make it better by half an hour with a Demon Tweaks catalogue?!
Then again, I have a TVR and they probably didnt even spend half an hour developing it! (But it still turned out pretty good!).

Spot on Pikey - I feel the same way.
Sure you could wring a few more bhp out of it with a few mods, but in my opinion the car's pretty well right as it is. There's always the issue of how any mods affect the warranty. Honda seem better than some manufacturers on this but they do dig there heels in sometimes leaving the owner to pick up the bill when without mods there would be no query.

I have to say that my original request was really for an aural improvement....after my 450 chim I do miss a bit of noise, the powerething is a mere side issue and as said by others I do not wish to alter the useability of the thing! i just wish I could hear more of the engine note below 6000!

I know what you're saying - my previous car was a Griff 500 and the sound of the S2000 is no match. Mind you, makes a nice racket when its in VTEC
hi m8
the best things to do with regards to breathing
Mugen air induction kit, it's far from cheap but dyno proven with better results than the others.
sexeh carbon fibre too.
skunk2 racing for the exhaust too.
then think about getting the hondata K-pro remap on the module to bring the power in earlier and for longer.

Have you tried removing the airbox cover? The car has a much better noise with it off but you lose a few bhp (on warm days particularly).
1. Open bonnet.
2. Undo the silver clips around the airbox, they are captive so won't go anywhere.
3. Put airbox cover in boot.
4. Go for a drive
Every S2000 owner must try this at least once.

Try taking the exhaust off. Plenty of noise, sounds pretty good infact and the cat lasts longest on the shelf of your garage.
