Seem to be quite cheap relative to spec/power/ride etc, but finding no useful owner reports/experience online. Anyone on here have one and have positive/negative experiences?

I've got the 2.5 petrol, very good all rounder, loads of kit, rides and handles quite well

I test drove a Mazda3 2.2D Sport today. I was very impressed. Seems a great engine and the car has a very high spec. For a 2.2D with 185hp the power delivery was not the 'here it comes and now its gone' many diesels seem to be - very smooth power delivery. However, I am concerned at reports regarding problems with the DPF. Failed re-gens dump diesel fuel into the sump so the engine is then lubricated with contaminated oil - doesn't seem good for engine life.

I have owned one of the above for over a year.
Great car, great engine and no issues with the DPF.

I'd imagine owning a 6 will be a similar experience.

Thanks for the replies folks! How does it handle and what's the gearbox/clutch like?

Assuming the 2.2D Mazda6 uses the same gearbox as the Mazda3 then the gearchange is very good - short movements and very positive. Mazda3 handling seemed fine. I also drove a 2-litre petrol 3 to check whether the extra weight of the 2.2 diesel adversely affected the handling - couldn't detect any difference although I was driving on public roads and so didn't push it that hard. I thought the 6 had a good reputation for handling.

50% of my driving time is set in city stop-start traffic even though ~80% of my mileage is done on motorways. Clutch on my yoke is incredibly heavy and the gearbox is weighty(in a nice way usually!).

Really starting to warm to one, plenty of 2.2d 185s from 2008-2009 to choose from for under 9k!

As I said in an earlier post, "Failed re-gens dump diesel fuel into the sump so the engine is then lubricated with contaminated oil - doesn't seem good for engine life." I am concerned that buying used (particularly with a fairly high lileage) could be buying a car that has been run on contaminated oil. If it wasn't for this concern I would have bought the Mazda3 2.2D (185) Sport that I test drove.

I would suggest that you think carefully if 20% of your mileage is in stop-start traffic.

I'm well aware of potential DPF issues as they've been around since the last model Mazda 6 diesel.

My Mazda 6 2.2 diesel 185 hp Sport is going well (kiss of death!) at 166,000 miles (59 reg). No DPF issues although I have driven it mainly on the motorways. No engine, gearbox nor clutch issues (still the original!). Main issues are the brakes which chew through front discs every 20,000 miles or so, and I'm not hard on them. The pads occasionally stick, so the brakes get stripped down and cleaned every alternate service. Usual electric gremlins, ventilation fan, alarm, key fob signal receiver. Massive inside, great long distance car. Sat in an A6 recently and commented how much smaller inside it was that my Mazda 6. Shocks are very tired now, so open to suggestions for their replacement make..? Fuel consumption is approx 47 mpg even when being driven swiftly. Would recommend it to be on your shortlist.
