The S2000 is a bit of a bargain if you look at the (basic) list prices on the test:

Boxster S £38,150
Tamora £36,500
Merc SLK £34,270
350Z £32000 (import)
Z4 3.0 £ 31,325
S2000 £27,513.

As you say, once you add leather, alloys and a few other bits the Merc is very pricey indeed.

I do agree with some of the criticism of the S2000. On a road I know, the engine is great, on a road I dont know, I often find myself in the wrong gear out of the VTEC zone. It can be frustrating. If money were no option, I think I would have the Merc - I prefer the Front engine, rear drive look.

I was a little disappointed in EVOs article for a number of reasons. I think comparing a 27k car wth a car costing over 10k more is abit unfair. There were positives ie driver centred controls, gearbox, styling which got a brief mention. I've driven a few cars and used to own a TVR and the s2000 gearbox is the best i've used hence making use of VTEC a pleasure. In the real world we spend half of our time sitting in traffic or crawling along, so benefits re: mpg are welcome.IN my opinion for value for money, styling, build quality, exclusivity, running costs it probably have finished at the top (I gather that this feeling is shared by a fair few as there a 3 month wait for new cars according to a dealer i spoke to a couple weeks back)

Evo have said in the past that they disregard cost when doing these group tests, which kind of makes them irrelevant in the real world. I can't honestly see the point in comparing a 27k car with a 38k car in this way (why not test the 2.5 Boxster? Oh, because the Porsche might not win then!), cars are built on a strict cost basis of course if you're paying 11 grand more you will generally get more for your money. They might as well have tested the NSX instead! Hell, why didn't they just borrow their mates Enzo and test that! Complete bollocks.

They don't make a 2.5 Boxster anymore

Same thing in this months trackcar test. Noble M400 at £58k verses 360CS at £130k, the Noble posts a quicker laptime then looses as the 360CS and 911RS are better built and have nicer interiors

im an evo subscriber,i love their reviews and everything, but recently ive noticed a trend.
if it aint a porsche,it aint gonna win a group test.

of the cars they tested,i would much rather have the s2000 over any of the others.
this is a vid clip from a couple of years ago,it features and boxter,an s2000,a 350z,m3,and r34 gtr- www.d.robertson.dsl.pipex.com/Pictures/BestMotoring_350Z_TsukubaBattle.asx
