Hi! Its my first post on here but I've been I long time reader. I need some advice on buying a y reg 140bhp Celica. The one I'm looking at has about 80k on the clock and has (supposedly) fish. I know about these have high oil consumption problems, is this on all pre facelift models or is it pot luck? When I start it up when I'm looking at it will I hear the famous engine knock straight away or does it have to be driven for a while? Any other problems I should look out for? Also has anybody got any positive story's about these ie engines not blowing up? Because all I read is negative!

A friend has one with all the oil drinking problems. It is well into the 100k territory and is solid. He keeps an eye on the oil and tops up when required. There is no noise from the engine and all in all feels like a car with half the mileage.

The problem is oil usage which your not going to know until you have owned it. Ours was great but it was thirsty on oil, like a litre every 600 mileseek

I owned one until quite recently. Mine had the optional sport & premium packs. 'Sport' adds larger alloys (17in) & the rear spoiler; 'premium' gives you leather seats & electric sunroof. I think the oil consumption issue is just pot luck: my 60k-miler didn't burn any oil at all. Minor issues: the tailgate struts are a bit weak; the cabin's a bit noisy, and it could be said that Celicas were a bit 'all show & no go'. Apart from that, I loved mine to bits!
