What's the general consensus on them as an overall car?

Just come home from putting a deposit on one!

For the money, I don't think anything comes close. Just had a very wet trest drive today so can't really comment until I pick it up on Wedensday.

Got all the things you need.
Very good engine.
Driver and front seat passenger accomodation and ride not to bad, rear passenger ride a little harsh, would'nt like to travel a long way in the back of one.
MPG not that great, i'm on 11K on mine from new and according to the trip about 28.4 MPG.
Pretty reasonable on track, if you want to do that kind of thing.
As has been the subject of other threads, readily tunable to daft BHP's quite cheaply, if you want.
As previous post very good value for money.

I really like mine, and also like the sound it makes.

Apologies if that sounds boring' but i'm trying hard to be subjective, I do actually think these are great cars, that will never be recognised as such.

PS, look for pre reg and demonstrator bargains.

best value performance hatch you can buy right now. easily tuned to focus rs specs, or beyond

often overlooked in favour of the ' in crowd ' golf gti/focus rs etc

i love mine and wouldn't swap for any current hot hatch

Good car with a good engine, just in a hot hatch category where quite a few other cars do it a bit better.

awesome cars, im not a massive fan of the mk2 looks, but i love my mk1 as someone else said in terms of value and what you get i don't think they can be beat by another hot hatch

Yes they are good value by way of mileage and reg due to being one of the heaviest depreciators. And as standard you do get around 30bhp more than most hot hatches.

But they are awkward looking and just not as good to drive or as nice to sit in as a focus st, golf gti, r26, cupra, vxr etc.

A cheap one is hard to beat for value yes, but at 19k you are looking to throw a lot of money away.

looks is a personal preference i like the looks of the mk1 as most of the other hot hatches, not as good to drive? in what way i drove most of the hot hatches there not as raw as say the CTR but they are comfy refined quiet when you want them to be or can give off some noise when you want

As for sitting in again, the cupra and r26 are at the bottom imo then you have the VXR/mps in the middle with the ST and GTI the nicest

Each hot hatch has it's pros and cons, and while i agree with you i would never but one at 19k, lets not that the mps is the heaviest depreciator because it isn't

the focus ST r26 can all be picked up for 6-7k on an 07 plate just the same as the mps, personally i don't buy a car for an investment anyway its to use and drive

I can see the appeal of the 3 MPS (especially when tuned). I suppose it depends on what you want the car to excel at i.e. looks, performance, all round practicality, etc. I looked at most of the options available a year ago (Golf GTI, RenaultSport stuff, Focus ST, etc) but in the end came away with an Impreza WRX PPP. Good looking they aren't but it still makes me grin over a year on at how well it handles its 260+hp in any weather and it really is a fantastic drive. They are excellent value too and pretty well spec'd inside if you get a facelift blobeye with the newer dashboard and other tweaks. Just a thought.

Had one for 2 days now. Still not driven it in the dry, but I love it so far.

Very quick, great stereo and toys, much prefer it to my wifes previous Golf GTI DSG. Only thing I do not like is first gear. With the torque reduced it feels very "flat". On the other hand 80 to 100 leptons is quick in 6th and down a wet country lane it would leave my last car for dead, a VXR8.

An email has already gone to BBR......

Who else would you look at for tuning? Had a quick look on an MPS forum and two firms are mentioned, Versatune and Hypertech. Neither of which I have heard of before. I have followed BBR for 20 odd years, though still not reply to my email 3 days later......

There are a few companies who tune these cars with the ecutek software, some good, some not so good. I used Clive atthowe in Norwich and he gets the thumbs up from me

There is for the Mk1, Versatuner and Hypertech don't yet work on the Mk2, though Versatune are working on it. BBR have bought a Mk2 and have been running the car as a test mule for 14 months so it's proven to be safe. You don't get that with every tuner so be aware of the cheaper alternatives.

The only thing wrong with the MPS is the owners who think they can outrun the Millenium Falcon after a stage 1 remap.....

You should meet danneth before you criticise. I believe his car can currently outrun light, only cost him £4.50 and he swapped his tuning for a half eaten Topic bar.

If you can prove anything i say to be incorrect about the car then feel free to, or you can keep acting about 10
