What's the general consensus on them as an overall car?

the mkI mps aero is a fantastic car, fast as you'd ever need a car to be. fun to drive and a pleasure to own. apart from the bills... road tax is expensive. fuel is too, you have to use super unleaded in this.

I've had the Mk2 for just about a year now, i like it. It's a comfortable cruiser when i drive 120 miles to work on a Monday morning and will also put a silly grin on my face blasting the 18 miles down B roads when staying in the Hotel during the week. The Mk2 tax is £260, insurance is cheaper than my old Type R, servicing is under £200 and mine returns 32mpg so it's not that expensive to run either.
I've slightly modified mine to around 310bhp but can take 400 with standard internals as they are forged from the factory. Comes loaded with kit, though the sat nav is a bit crap and when i spec'd a Golf to the same level it was about £15k more so you can't argue that it's a fantastic bargain.
The plastics inside don't compare to the golf though and it won't handle like a megane 250 but i'm not into driving hard round corners on public roads so it doesn't bother me.

It's not without it's faults, but then no car is so if you can live with them it'll be a fantastic car to own, it's also very capable overtaking tool and i've shown up a few supposedly quick cars.

Did you use BBR to take yours to 310bhp? If so can I ask howm much that cost you and how much of a difference you feel?
