Looking at an Evo. Rear light and anything else to look for?
Discussion
Im half tempted to buy an Evo. Firstly, what is this rear light? I assume its the rear foglight but some have it and some dont. Are those that have it imports of some sort? If so, what problems can arise as a result of this?

^To the right of the plate.
Secondly, do you need to be a type of person to drive an evo? I've never modded a car in my life and never been to a car 'meet'. Is it ok to own an Evo and just drive it normally as a daily hack to work and back?
I adore fast saloons, and have always been a vectra/3-series/mondeo man. Something quick, with reasonable interior. Im told not to let the crappy Evo interior bother me as the power and driving ability make up for it. Im just unsure that going from all these sensible saloons to a boy racer style evo doesnt fit my personality, loud exhausts and all that.
Lastly, i assume these are belt driven engines? What interval is on them and is there anything else i should look out for? Im looking for a totally standard one, anything that has been modded or makes me look like a drug dealer is a no-go.

That is indeed a rear fog light, this could be a sign the car is an import but I believe the earlier ones all came with them even the UK cars. If it is an import then insrance will be higher and you may need to run it on higher octane fuel than UK cars.
I don't think Evo's have a type of driver, other 4wd jap rally cars do but personally I don't expect to see a certain type behind the wheel of an evo whereas I would with other cars.
Normally belts should be changed at about 50/60k or 5 yrs whichever is sooner although I'm sure someone with specific evo knowledge will be able to confirm.

Why would that not be ok? It's not like there is some obligation to go to car meets, or some rule against commuting in a Japanese sports car.As for finding a standard one, good luck. Most, if not all will have at the very least an aftermarket exhaust.
Hi,
have an evo 6 gsr, as an alround car it is hard to beat. Can use for carting the kids about, then go for a trackday. Evo's are cheap to buy but expensive to maintain properly. Middle serice is cheap enough at £140
but some services will cost £800 which would be advisable after buying a car belts ect

That's a foglight, and came on the Evo 8 GSR - the jap import.
The UK versions of the 8 won't have this.
As for fuel, ALL evo's should be run on high octane, not just the jap versions.
There's no demographic for these cars. Owners range from 18 year old chavs to 50 year old enthusiasts.
Fuel economy is terrible, even driven sensibly. Tax isn't cheap, and insurance isn't cheap either, especially on an import.
The interior in the GSR is awful, especially the seats. The alcantara seats of the MR version are far better. As you say though, the interior is not why you buy these cars.
On the road it's hard to find a better car for the money. Performance is immense, especially after a decat, fuel pump and a remap. After this, you should see 360 bhp easily. They stick to the road like glue, and are a very addictive car.
Things to look out for include:
Accident damage. Make sure you HPI it, honestly.
Rattles, knocking or excessive oil usage. This could be bottom end, which won't be cheap. You're looking at around £3000 minimum for a rebuild.
Service history. Make sure it's genuine. Follow it up. Sometimes history can be bluffed, especially the likes of Xtreme UK.
I can't recommend these cars enough. What's your budget, if you don't mind me asking?

Incorrect. UK Supplied Evo 8's will also have the foglight there, except for the EU Whole Type Approved "260" version (which also has 2 cats). The UK versions of the 8 won't have this.
Besides, the car in the photo is a 9, not an 8, and the 9's also all have the fog light there AFAIK.

Is that an Evo 9 (in which case where's your fog light, as I can't see it in the clusters) or is it an 8 with a 9 rear bumper (in which case the fog light may have been lost in the conversion.)
Fog light bulb normally goes in one of the reverse lights if a IX bumper skin is fitted.mrmr96 said:

A pic of one of mine. No foglight.

It was a 9. I understand where you're coming from though, as I wondered this myself. All I could come up with was that the rear bumper had been replaced, or else that's how it left the factory. I dunno.
AFAIK they leave Japan like that but the powers to be in the UK then cut a hole in the bumper and fit a fog light.Really spoils the look of the bumper IMO when they do that.

Even with the bootlid being one million shades off?
Never even noticed

On a similar note, i hear that the MPG on these cars is terrible. Why is that, even on normal careful driving? My friend had an Impreza many years ago and he said even with slow driving, it would eat through fuel.
Is it just because of how rich the mixture has to be to get the performance or something?
