I remember reading somewhere that the engine in the early MX5s is the same as the Mazda 323 1.6 turbo,
without the turbo of course.

Now the Mrs has got a 1996 1.6 MX5 and she wants a bit more poke. (insert nob gag here)

So instead of paying out for a HKS or similar turbo kit at circa to 2,000 quid.

Could the engine from a 323 turbo be transplanted?
Or could the turbo and manifold and other bits be taken off a 323 and fitted to the MX5?

Anyone with any knowledge about this?

If she just wants a "bit" more poke, I would suggest a second-hand Jackson racing supercharger. There is one on e-bay at about 500 quid at the moment.

In fact there is quite a good market in second-hand lower power turbo/super units, as people get the power bug and upgrade!

The 323 engine transplant has been done, but tbh it's more hassle than it's worth. I would always prefer a path that has been well troden before, with all the ins and outs covered.

Greddy turbo kits are cyrrently £950 delivered, kinda makes the whole engine route rather dudd.

Good for 250 bhp with intercooling allegedly.

I know of a 1.6 greddy using a tecIII running 225hp at the wheels. If you want more advice try www.tracktec.co.uk , they are very good.

If its a '96 UK MX-5, it will have the lower spec 90 bhp engine that bares little resemblence to the earlier 116bhp engine - more of a std. 323 engine.

If uprating the engine, I would think upgrading of the bakes to 1.8 MX-5 spec at least, as well as the clutch. Stiffer shocks and springs would be good too imho

Well spotted Ijaz! I can't believe I missed that!

As Ijaz says, tuning options are VERY limited on the post 94 uk 1.6. You would be better off chopping it in for a 1.8. Cost to change, and all that, would probably be less than an engine transplant. Also insurers aren't too keen on 1.6s turning into 1.8s, you also have to consider re-sale if it's not a car that will be kept for a long time.
