11 year old classic scooby
Discussion
Dilema
I have an 11 year scooby, runs fairly well (touch wood), probably needs a new gear box in the next year, lots of little cosmetic bits need doing that will add up:
Wheel refurb (all)
rust on wheel arch and small dent needs sorting (friken shopping trolley did the dent)
motor on drivers side electric window replacement
rear electric window doesn't work at all
subwoofer rewiring
rear speakers blown
rear callipers need either a massive clean and paint or replaced
Dilema = I haven't got the skills to do do the work myself so there would be labour on top, do I just say it's had it's day and get something new? Or spend money on an already old car that I imagine will start becoming more and more expensive as the years go on, although my mate said better the devil you know...

Wheel refurb (all) - £300ish for a good job
rust on wheel arch and small dent needs sorting (friken shopping trolley did the dent)- Dent could be £30 to fix in 5 minutes, rust could be up to £350 (that's what I was quoted for a cut, weld new metal and respray at a decent body shop for a rusty arch on my Fiesta) but it could be chronic and much worse than you are expecting
motor on drivers side electric window replacement- Unlikely to find one at a scrappy. Could try ebay for a cheap one, alternatively pay full whack for a new one and try fitting it yourself.
rear electric window doesn't work at all - As above
subwoofer rewiring - Depends what you mean by "rewiring", most stuff is easy enough but you could budget say, £80-£100 for an autoelectrician to do it. You could probably buy a sub with new wiring and fit it yourself when you get above the £100 mark.
rear speakers blown - A case of paying as much as you want for a speaker, should be fairly simple to fit by yourself
rear callipers need either a massive clean and paint or replaced - Easy enough to remove, scrub down and paint. Not sure how much a new set of calipers would cost, could be a bit pricey if you need a garage to fit them.
Sounds to me like none of these are critical jobs - it's not like the gearbox has blown up or the suspension has collapsed or something. You could probably fix most of this on a budget or just ignore it and live with the problems. I understand your concern though, in that it might be getting a bit long in the tooth and it might be better to move it on. Obviously, if you want to sell it you will have to be honest about it or try and at least tidy up what you can on it. Maybe it would be worth getting something newer so you can have day to day peace of mind that bits won't start blowing up and falling off (hopefully).
I suppose it's up to you, and it comes down to how much time you have, how much effort you want to put in on the DIY and how much you want to keep the car, or try something new.
Start by ditching the sub and speakers, weigh to much, make ya car go slower, and you wont have to replace em with anything that way, saving yaself some cash.
Secondly, stick winders on the rear window and front window that dont work, nice cheap, and less weight.
Brakes, you can pick a servicable set of rear claipers up for arond £50 depending on type, stick a set of pads and discs on for another £50 and thats that sorted.
Gearbox replacement arond £200 for a second hand one.
Paintwork, as already mentioned, could be done cheaper but its all about the quality of the workmanship, if you plan on keeping the car for a while, its worth dong properly, at the end of the day its gonna cost you a damn site more than the above to go and buy a new car.

In my experience of Subarus, they are pretty good even at 15+ years old provided they are looked after. I've seen far newer cars with more issues.
I have a selection of spares including window motors and standard speakers that were removed from my track car. Happy to be rid of them for a nominal sum if it would help someone out - I could do with reclaiming some space in my garage. Is it the rear arch or front that needs work? I have a couple of spare front wings that are rust free...

Yep I know most of the are DIY jobs but I really wonldn't be happy doing them on my own and like getting the wheels off, I don't have the tools or the physical strength and I certainly wouldn't be confident in fitting an electric motor in for the window, I need a supervisor lol who knows what they are doing.
It 11 years old with 111,000 miles on clock, if you have some spare parts that sounds like a plan/
The rust is on the rear drivers side

hi
am actually based in Hull, I know the scooby clinic is in Chesterfield but still a bit of a trek and I bet I will pay through the nose for jobs I could (with a bit of supervision do myself) other problem is a currently lodging with no off road parking, so no where for me to actually do the work either, I love my car (as simple as it is is) and would like to look after it properly if only someone would help me with a bit of their time

yes get on scoobynet there's always a few cars being broken for spares so you'll be able to pick up the parts you need fairly cheap.
