we have just bought an 07 Avensis 2.2 diesel and apparently it has 180 HP (or just under) it just doesn't seem really quick off the mark,

we did buy it as a sensible family car so not utterly critical, the car seems to pick up speed nicely once on the move especially at motorway speeds but seems quite sedate from a standing start, its a car for my wife mainly but I will take it out and see how to coax some proper performance out of it this weekend,

also does anyone know the best way to get updates for the sat nav?

Different car, but I have a diesel Mondeo and to be honest they just are not quick off the line. They are turbo charged so are laggy and also being diesel can not rev hard... I am yet to try launching mine rofl

Maybe its just a case of knowing your vehicle, but I think I can hustle my transit diesel quicker of the mark, we only bought an Avensis Estate after the arrival of my first child, a daughter, so not after burning rubber on every trip!

Perhaps, I know 2nd gear very well in the Mondeo as you can get it shifting at low speeds in that.... Maybe it's just the set up of the car...

Will that change the 'off the line' behaviour of the car?

Nah, it'll still rattle.

If it's a turbo diesel then I'm not surprised it's a bit slouchy off the line. Like all diesels it will have a bit of torque to get it rolling but it needs boost to really get moving, which won't come without load on the engine generated by moving in the first place. On top of that, diesels don't rev high, and they don't rev quickly, so even on boost I would not expect it to charge for the redline.

That said, if it's a family hack, how often do you launch it? 20/30 - 60/70 is a more useful figure imo!

Diesels come into their own on the motorway when it comes to fuel economy. Round town, especially when cold are not that much better than petrol. Also, repeated town driving causes the particulate filters to knacker on some cars...
