Hi guys,

My 02 sti type uk developed a knocking sound around the rear drivers side, initially thought it may be the bearing or even the strut. Recently however, this knock has turned to a squeek, the noise increases with the speed of the car but not when accelerating. i.e squeeking gets faster with the faster rotation of the wheel. I thought it may be a brake problem, but it doesnt stop when hitting the brakes either?

Any ideas/thoughts would be greatly appreciated guys.

Rear drivers side suspension top mount or the shock absorber itself.

Suspension maybe... My wheel bearing went at the back and made a knocking sound when cornering. It also made a whiring sound when going along...

I am not sure about the STI, but my WRX had wear detectors on the pads which, when worn down enough would allow the lip in the pad to touch the disc, causing the squeak.

As above, I had crazy low rear brake pads and I thought it was the handbrake sticking as once you drove away after a couple of miles the noise went. Have a look at the brakes and the strut, thats what I reckon it could be.

It really does sound to me Rear strut grease has gone hard. It can manifest as a knock, or a feelling that the struct is 'catching' as it compressses. It the latter that is causing your squeak.

Its usually always the rear driver side that fails.
