Are the Hyundai Coupes as good as my colleauges tell me?
Discussion
So I have never driven a Hyundai Coupe let alone any Jap car what so ever.
Got into a discussion at work today started by the guy who is 'really into cars' but still drives around in the car he bought when he passed his test 9 years go, which is still covered in flags from some big important footbal game years ago no doubt, and he started off by saying how good the Hyundai Coupes are and that his mum has one and its amazing and fast.
I hate these conversations because - a: I am a girl, and therefore blokes often think that I have no knowledge or interest in cars and b: I am a stubbon girl, so don't like being made out to be stupid.
Anyway...
I tell him that they have never appealed to me. (I like my beemers and currently drive a Z3 3.0. I would have loved to have bought a Honda S2000 instead, but insurance wouldn't allow it)
He says that they drive brilliantly and he asked me if I have ever driven one, so I tell him no, because it has never appealed to me. And at that point he tells me that I wouldn't know then. Which might be a fair point, but they have never appealed to me for a reason.
So I hoped the conversation would end there, but he carried on and said how his mums car is a V8 (which I am pretty sure didnt exist in these cars) and really fast and must be faster than my car seeing as hers was a V engine and mine was just a flat 6.
I explained to him that they are heavy engines and gave him the TT example of where the V6 TT is actually no faster than the 1.8t (225bhp) because of the weight to power ratio etc...
I ask him how fast, and he didn't know so I told him to look it up, and his face dropped when he realised that his mums 2.7 V6 only did 0-60 in 8.1 seconds.
Back to the point of my storey - are these Hyundai Coupes actually as good as what he was trying to tell me?
I don't see a lot on the road.
The ones i have seen up for sale are for dirt cheap money.
When I do see them on the road they are often driven by older single ladies.

They are pure and utter bab! Secondly they don't really come under a 'jap' car category as they are Korean.
They are slow, ugly, crap and cheap tat. I work with someone who has one and he regrets ever buying it
Well done on putting the (not so 'into cars') kid right on the V6 point
What i can't get my head around is that someone who is 'really into cars' fantasises over their mums crappy Hyundai coupe tat?
Go give him a slap
Korean, not Jap! The Jap's don't like Hyundai's, and see them as vastly inferior quality cars, which to be fair they are in comparison.
You can get a lot of car for your money, and they're pretty good looking (except for the facelift ones they did to try and copy the quad headlights of a Gen 6 Celica!) but they're nothing special, and certainly not quick.

I had a Mk1 Coupe F2 - at the time it was a good looking thing and was really reliable. More of a cruiser than an out and out sports car mind. The thing that let it down was the interior quality. The plastics are a bit cheap and the leather seems to wear badly, especially in the bolsters if not looked after properly. But it had electric mirror, windows, sunroof, cruise control, fairly big boot.
I am looking at a 05/06 2.0 one (which I think is a decent looking car) for a run around and more practicle car as I need one and I'll keep my S2000 for the nice weekends. Don't let badge snobbery put you off.

As others seem to have said they are pretty average cars that make use of fairly old technology (hence they are cheaper as less engine development than many rivals). If you look at the performance (bhp) of the engines for their respective sizes they are about 20 yrs of development behind Toyota and Honda for example.
I had a friend a few years ago who bought a near new 2.0 example and wouldn’t shut up about how fast it was, I went out in it wasn’t too impressed so took him out in my mr2 turbo I had at the time (which he dismissed as being too old to be as fast) as soon as I put my foot down he went very quiet and I no longer had to listen to his ramblings of how fast it was etc.

They are ... ok, not bad cars, but not amazing.
BTW, your engine is a straight 6, not a flat 6.
Uhoh! You caught me out, I actually don't know much about cars at all. BTW, your engine is a straight 6, not a flat 6.
So hyundai aren't in the sam category as Jap cars. Well that might explain why they just don't have that special something
i dont think you can get a better looking car for the money
granted its not a dynamic out and out performance motor but it sure is priddy .
think of it like the modern day capri .
the 1.6 and 2.0 versions of them were just cortinas in drag
the hyundai coupe is simalarly no faster than a same size in cc mondeo
but i can forgive it just for its looks
theres a bit of 70s renault alpine in there
and a bit of the old skool opel manta
its also extlemery leriable as the japs or in this case the koreans would say
its built like your regular jap car .
alltogether its a big thumbs up from me !

if he's still got the same car when he passed surely he won't know what's better. a bmw z3 is vastly superior to a hyundai coupe in the driving abilities. They are pretty to look at but underneath they are nothing special.
underneath it may as well be a vectra or mondeo. Not bad cars but not exactly performance cars or drivers cars.
so basically the guy at your work knows nothing and talking rubbish, your car is better in pretty much every single way.
