Hardly ever hear anyone saying anything about these cars, but on paper they seem a good bet.

As I know nothing about jap stuff, I thought I'd ask you lot.

Whats not to like ? and should I buy one ? Im 6'4" in height and no slim jim BTW.

Been wondering about one, too. Seems the chassis is well liked, but almost everyone says it was underpowered. So most MR2 interest centres on the Mk2 turbo.

Mk3 is infamous for having VERY little storage space, too.

Having said all of that, go to YouTube and search for the V6 conversions. biggrin

The turbo conversions for them are good. But, they should have had the 190 engine in them, at least as an option. Good chassis, but no power.

not really underpowered for the road, you just have to rev them hard

I had a Mk2 MR2 for a couple of years and absolutley loved it, then got the chance to use a Mk3 for a bit and at first the whole 'hairdresses' car image did taint my opinion before i had even started but...

I thought it was brilliant, gearbox felt good, engine revved nicely and it felt alot more stable and useable when being pushed than my old Mr2, even the cabin felt good. However, having been use to the Mk2 which had enough space for suitcases and all the rest I was shocked to see that the Mk3 had pretty much no storage at all; I don't understand why they made it like that as it makes it a bit impractical for most people.

Not sure if you have tried one yet but I doubt you'll fit comfortably. I'm 6'5" and medium build I couldn't even get in the thing let alone drive it.
Shame as I really fancied one

Drove one the other day - driving position is not quite the perfection of an Elise, but pretty damn close.

Exactly.

Hence me getting up at 7.30 tomorrow to drive for an hour and a half to try and buy a very nice example !

There's a few threads on em here.

Avoid pre-2003's like the plague is all i'm gonna put in the now. Engines are ste.

I don't see how that can happen but basically the engines are just crap, they have problems mostly with oval bores, if they don't get oil every 500-1000miles (and they don't normally) then they get too low and fall apart.

post 2003, facelift seem to have sorted the problem mostly.

My understanding of the situation is that poor quality piston rings led to oil loss through the exhaust valves which caused rapid break up or the precats in the ex manifold, of which debris was sucked into the ngine during EGR further exacerbating the issue.The main cat then gts blocked with debris until game over.

Not an issue if the owner checks the oil level very often and aslo totally removes the precats from the manifold.

Nah, the oil in the cylinder does block up the main cat but the pre-cats falling apart is not gonna find it's way back into the engine.

Just ste bores, chocolate cranks and a crap, rushed engine.

Honestly, i've replaced more than 10 pre-2003 engines over the last year and a half. Standard practice would be facelift car and swap the manifold for a che or similar.

Right, just got back from viewing.

Overall, not bad condition for 71k, small area of paint carzing on NSF bumper and towing eye cover is missing.

Service history is stamped every 10/12k with Toyota stamps up to 39k, and the salesman said they had checkd and that it has also had 40 + 50k done but not stamped ?
I have since verified this the dealer and would need to post the service book on to get the stamps.

I think its been on the lot since late Feb as the Mot is done by them and dated for then.

The brakes are poor, noisy with soft pedal and no feel.

More worryingly, the engine management light came on during test drive.They had recently replaced the battery and said it was probably down to that, but it worrys me. A lot.

Also, I thought the clutch pedal felt a bit soft and with no real zing, didnt notice any slip though.

Whats your opinions guys ?

Walk away IMO.

EML can be bodged to go off after a battery reset, which it sounds like they've done to mask the problem.

Could be a dud lambda sensor, could be something much more serious.

Personally, i'd walk away.
