Was reading through the "Shmee's a Baby" thread and came across a number of very young people driving Aston Martins.

How is this? Apart from being a professional footballer or a high-flying actor I find it very hard to figure out how someone can have such a flash car at such a young age.

The old "I worked hard for it" line only make sense if you know "how they worked hard for it!"

Most high-paying non-self employed jobs require degrees, meaning you leave uni approaching 22 and no one just walks into a role where they earn that much to buy a sports / supercar!

It confuses me and makes me realise I probably went into the wrong industry!

  • Oh, and this isn't a dig! If you genuinely have worked hard for it and it's not paid for by daddy then well done smile

I too am interested how people make their money.

I am pleased for anybody who can afford to run a fab car at a young age (or any age!) – Especially the people who have earned the money – as a pose to inherited it.

I was not university educated and have never inherited a penny, but bought my first flash car (Lotus Esprit) as a 20 year old.

At the time I afforded to purchase it because I was making a lot of money in direct sales with low outgoings and no kids.

Well done on having a Lotus at such a young age! Can I assume, if it was a newish model, this was a few years back?

It must be even harder to do it today with ridiculous house and rental prices and general cost of living

Well the thread was obviously named after me so I should probably reply! I'm 23, and have my V8 Vantage Roadster and a Mini Countryman Cooper S.

A close summary of how it worked for me:

18/19 - left school, started a business (ShmeeMobiles), sold it, continued internet trading
20 - went to uni, hated it so left after a year, bought BMW 123d
21 - got job in an investment consultancy, internet trading part time
22 - promotion and bonus, bought S5 Cab, set up business 2 (Shmee150) as part time job
23 - main job successes and Shmee150 going well, buy V8V, then bonus, buy Countryman

I think the reason it works is because I have no interest in property, have no big expenses or family or any of that, in fact life probably 'only' costs about £15-20k a year for rent and non-car things. Yes I have been helped by my parents along the way too, but I consider that part of the drive to have got this far by being given the opportunity in the first place - I guess it's complicated with 2 siblings in university funded by family (one going into 5th year).

For interest if you haven't thought about it like this before:

If you earn £30k and life costs £20k then you have £10k a year to play with.
If you earn £60k, life still costs £20k so you have £40k a year to play with.

A quadruple in available expenditure for only doubling a salary and obviously if you add a bit more to that you start to see how an AM at a young age is more than possible.

I left school at 16 and did an apprenticeship in engineering.

Set up a company at 19 (with financial help from parents).

I bought the car whilst I still have minimal outgoings and I may not have the chance to afford something like it later in life. Probably going to have to sell it within a few years as I'm planning on working abroad for 75% of the time.

Least I will be able to say I had an Aston at 21, not many people can say that.

Well done to George & Shmee clap
I think us olds came from a time when "investing" in a mortgage at a young age took all the disposable income so cars became second in line frown
It's all about the disposable income! laugh

Well done to both of you by the way!

All I want to know now is who the amazing Flemke is! I'm always amazed at the amount of time he takes to answer people's questions about his McLaren and other cars in such a thoughtful, articulate fashion while clearly being an ultra-successful businessman (I guess!)

It was a six month old S2 (in 1980) The Esprit had only been out a short time. Interestingly the car was previously Nigel Mansells 'company car' - I can't remember, but I think he must have been driving for them at the time.

My Storey,

I left school at 16 having hated education, Secured 11 GCSEs and that was it for me couldn’t think of anything else than staying on.

At 16, I secured with Deloitte training in Accountancy, stayed there for a couple of years before moving into financial systems with Santander & ComputaCentre at around 19.
Got bored very quickly and felt that there must be easier ways to make good money and fund my ambition of having a nice cars.

I managed to secure myself a role within recruitment industry with an organisation that was only 6 months old. Risky but with enough driven, passion & enthusiasm and I knew it would pay off.
7 Years on I am still with the same organisation and get well looked Having grown my business from £0 to around £1.5 Million p/a

As a side line Although not a business, I tend to change my cars frequently. Careful buying has enabled me to make profits on my last 7 cars which I then invest in the next.

Car History

17 – 18 – Nova GSI
18 – 19 – Saxo
19 – 19 – Renault Sport Clio
20 – 20 – Mini Cooper S JCW
21 – 21 – BMW Z4 3.0 Cabriolet
21 – 22 – Porsche Cayman S
23 – 24 – Porsche c2s Cabriolet (997)
25 to 25 – Got married and had a mid life crises and couldn’t decided what I wanted so had a few at the same time include Range Rover Sport, Z4M Coupe, Audi RS4 Cabriolet and Mini Cooper S JCW

Since the above my 1st child has arrived meaning I have had to settle down and felt that a V8 Vantage combined all of what I was wanting from the above sports cars. Love the car but already thinking of the next step DBS or V12 Vantage if the wife permits.

I already have a nice property not far from Silverstone so have nothing else to spend my money on but cars, my little girl & wife……. Yes in that order…. Fingers Crossed the wife won’t read this otherwise I will be in trouble.

Brilliant smile

It's thoroughly enjoyable reading these stories today - must find that gap in the market now to make my move and fund that Lamborghini at last!

Fellow young people (I think I can classify myself as a young person at 36! Shut it everyone else!) I commend you for your hard work and achievements and thank you for your honesty too.

You could have quite easily told the old guys on the forum "Like, it's nun of your business in it" (note the street talk! I'm down with the kids!) but I'm pleased no one said "Daddy is Lord Wexford and he felt we really should go British" (not that there is anything wrong with that of course but it's not hard work that made it happen)
