Now I know this has been asked before (some time ago), but I could do with an update from someone who knows: -

I'm thinking of getting an iPhone 4 to replace my Nokia and iPod; I've checked with Eurowatch, and yes, it can be used (like my Nokia) with the Tracker instead of the Aston tracker 'cards' - good news!

My question is - will it plug into the Aston iPod lead, and will that charge the phone. Currently it will only charge my iPod 2nd generation and not the newer ones that I've got. If not, is there a 'joining' plug available?

If it won't charge the iPhone I won't buy one! My car is a 2008 Vantage.

Thanks in advance!

Gerry I plug my iphone4 into the AM ipod in my 2009 DB9.

It works very well. It allows incoming calls to take over, and to change tunes / volume on the steering wheel.

But no, it does NOT charge the phone, so I would guess it would be the same with your V8V.

Perhaps someone with a V8V could confirm this smile

My V8V charges my I phone 4 as well as all the facilities Jock mentions.

You need to keep the phone updated. One particular update on the I phone and it wouldn't play voicemail through either the Aston or BMW speaker system. A further update sorted that anomaly.

Cannot get mine to charge through the AM OR my company BMW so will check for any updates.

Thanks for the info.

My iPod Nano was of the type that wouldn't charge so I bought one of these and now it works perfectly:

It might be appropriate here too?

My lead charges my iPhone BUT the tracker people could not get my iPhone to pair with the cars tracker so I'm using my old Sony erikson as my tracker fob lol

Just updated my iphone4 software through itunes.

Still not able to charge the phone on my 2009 DB9 frown

Even plugged in the phone to the USB Port to see if that would charge it, but to no avail.

I'm assuming that the software in the car may need upgrading.

Have you tried one of the Scosche things noted earlier Jockman?

The charging capability is not software driven, it's hardware. Quite some time ago Apple dropped charging via firewire, but accessory vendors were slow on the uptake and kept the pins of their connectors as if said charging was still possible. The Scosche adaptor effectively crosses the pins on the adapter so a poorly executed accessory can charge a later device.

Bluetooth capability is down to software (largely) and upgrading both the iPod and the car may improve things depending on what the problem is. My iPhone4 connects to my '07 V8V via Bluetooth and works fine (even as a tracker fob).

Murph - I think I'll order one and, from your excellent tutorial, this should bridge the problem - will keep you posted.

Just a bit concerned that the brand new apple USB charging adaptor will not charge it either through the USB point. It does start to charge then immediately stops. That's why I thought the problem lay with the car.

No problem with the telephony bluetooth and tracker fob issue, it really is only the charging status when I hardwire it for ipod music purposes. Plays music fine but no charging.

Feel free to invoice me for all the help you've given me today biggrin

The USB connection is likely just used to connect devices for data access, so may not have enough juice to charge the iPhone (or other devices)....probably just enough to operate a USB stick or maybe a small HDD.

It's a handy way of apple making more money! Switch a couple of wires around inside the phone and then start selling an accessory to allow you to charge it! Aston have fixed this now somewhere in 09my. The cars can now charge both types.

My October 2009 V8V didn't have the fix, but my Scosche thing does the job fine.

Apple make zero money from 3rd parties making the accessories. They probably sell about 0.1% of all the charging accessories on the market!

AIUI they also gave plenty of heads up that the change was going to happen...certainly to the makers that have the "approved" logos on their products.

Either way, tech moves on. If I had a pound for every time Nokia etc changed their ports I'd have a second Aston smile

Any product displaying the "Made for iPod" or "Made for iPhone" logo, Apple take 30% of revenue for. Yes, not 30% profit, but 30% of the sale price from manufacturer.

Just ordered from Amazon last night - thanks to Shmee and Murph for the heads up smile

What initially confused me was that it was for the iphone 3G and I thought that meant iphone 3 - doh! The iphone4 is a 3G.

I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

If this doesn't work Shmee, I will be adding another line about you to my 'brilliant' forum list biggrin
