Recklessly promised three years ago that I would arrange to take my then 12 year old to his prom in an Aston Martin and have just been reminded of it!!!! Prom is 1st July, and being a good Dad, am hoping to come good on the promise, if I can!

Is there anywhere in Essex/Suffolk that you can hire an Aston? Have checked out Aston Hire, are they a good place to hire from, and are their prices what I should expect to pay? I would only need to take him about 8 miles so it does seem a bit OTT but teenagers have long memories!

Your seriously going to pay all that money to take him 8 miles? They will probably require a massive deposit too, a complete waste imo.

If it was me, I would be quite ashamed to turn up in a flashy car I didn't own.

Not trying to fool anyone it's mine, that's for certain! Apparently, many of the other parents are arranging for limos and/or vintage cars and so am only trying to do the same for him.

That's a bit harsh!

Anyway, I would expect to pay £3-400 for a 1 day hire on a V8V so if you are serious about doing it I would try and make a whole day of it with your son and then take him to the prom in the evening. Or ocnvince someone that lives locally with an Aston to take him for you for a few beers.

If I lived locally I'd happily do it for free, 8 miles isn't exactly a big hardship to put a smile on someone's face.

So it would only be £50 a mile to rent one, seems a complete waste to me to try and show off

george, where's the 'kid' in you? 12 year olds dribble at the sight of these cars and I don't think that the OP was suggesting it was something that he was doing for himself, simply trying to fulfil a promise.

I know he isn't doing it for himself, but it's just showing off what you don't actually own, which I am not a fan of. Fair enough if it's your own car, but to rent one purely for the purpose is not something I see any point in.

Fair enough although I think William and Kate would seriously disagree smile

I think you've missed the point! It's not 'showing off', these Prom nights have become an event. Like weddings!!
People hire Limos and Rollers for weddings and Prom nights. Using an Aston is merely showing you have more style and taste!

Some chap yesterday borrowed an old, blue Aston from his dad for his wedding. Don't think he was merely showing off!!

Thank you for your support ladies and gentlemen. I need not justify the situation to anyone but, long story short....

My son is now 15 and will be 16 a few days after the Prom. The Prom marks the end of his GCSEs and also his time at his secondary school before, hopefully, moving on 6th Form college (as his school has no 6th form). He is what those of you who have/had teenagers may call a "reluctant" student, as many of us will remember, but he has actually sat down and really got to grips with his revision. I am not bigging him up, just stating the facts.

Several other parents have already arranged limos etc and I thought that, given the effort he has put in, it would be nice to hire something "unchavvy" to take him in.

The kids in his year have watched me turn up at school year in year out in the same car and are/will not be under any illusion that the car belongs to us/me. The prom night is a big deal in the US and has taken off here in the same way as "trick or treat" and, whether we like it or not, appears to be here to stay! Also, given that his 16th birthday iss very soon after I just thought that it would be something that he would remember.

Also, if I really intented to show off, a friend has an Enzo and that is very loud, very red and very in you face and would be somewhat more showy etc etc...which isn't the point. He would like to go in an Aston and that's that.

Well said. It sounds to me as if georgeh only has his Aston to show off, tbh, otherwise he wouldn't be so churlish.

+1 Dave, its a bit of a haul for us in the south west.

I did a couple of proms for friends kids last summer and would have helped Scamps out had I been closer.

Utterly ridiculous. If you were going to a special event and didn't want to/couldn't drive, would you go in a taxi - or turn up in a privately driven car of your dreams?

If I was local I would gladly be chauffeur for this young man and even wear a hat if it pleased him.

Good luck with finding someone.
