Struggling to get second gear

Guys

My V8V decided to play up just before the weekend so too late to get in touch with the guys at AM Amersham for their thoughts. Will call on Monday.

A couple of times today the car just didn't want to go into second gear. Both times was when approaching a roundabout and dropping down through the gears. Move it across for second gear and first time it just wouldn't engage and I had to declutch and try again and same again the second time but also that horrible graunching sound (and no it wasn't my poor technique!). Both times the car was fully warmed up.

Any ideas what this could be?

Is it a 4.3 or 4.7 ?

There are a few issues that can cause this, the cables can ride up in one of the u shaped mounting brackets and cause difficult selection, also at the end of the cables there is a rubber piece that can split causing the same issue, both these are relatively minor problems, or possibly a problem with 2nd gear syncro which is quite rare, how does it feel without the engine running, does it feel positive and easy or feel sloppy and difficult,

Assuming the gearbox service bulletin has been actioned in respect of the difficulty with 2nd gear this may be a dealer issue.Don't want to alarm you but I am aware of a 4.3 that had a similar issue with 5th gear and on inspection it was decided to replace the gearbox. On investigation part of the gear was found inside the box. Have to say though I am no expert and Rock is much better qualified than me to comment!

Cheers for the replies guys. It is under extended warranty so I am hoping that any minor or major issue is covered anyway. I will also make sure the service recall has been actioned as well.

Rick - with engine off the gearbox feels fine and positive. No selection problems at all. It also pulls absolutely fine in all gears just a couple of times it hasn't wanted to engage second.
