AMV8 - Dealer playing hard ball/ taking the pi55??
Discussion
Hi Guys,
Wondering if you can PLEASE help. I have found a nice, low milage AMV8, advertised by an AM dealer for the last two weeks, and when we went to see it, they tell me that:
a) the car is still with the old owner who is PX'ing it
b) they have a policy of not negotiating on price as "all there cars are priced to sell" so don't bother asking
c) we must place a deposit on the car before it is sold underneath us (as they sold 5 cars this week...) without ever seeing it.
are they serious?? Any advice would be massively appreciated, as i am keen on the car, but less happy about the way they seem to be going about the sale.
THANK YOU!

You're talking about a 4.3 Vantage, right?...if so, they aren't exactly in short supply...or have they offered you a blinding deal on the part exchange? They sound like good salesmen though....assuming they know just how far to push you...I wonder if they read Pistonheads?....There's one arrogant dealer out there - no names, but their name consists of 3 letters...who might try to pull such a trick....

A) it's possible if the new owner is still waiting to collect their new car.Wondering if you can PLEASE help. I have found a nice, low milage AMV8, advertised by an AM dealer for the last two weeks, and when we went to see it, they tell me that:

B) utter tosh
C) see B, unless it the car is spot on and even then have a return deposit clause put in.
thanks guys, that was what i was thinking as well. The car is a low milage 4.3 and its a cash purchase - so no px my side.
I just wondered if this was a familiar story to others looking through AM main dealers or if it was an old trick used by dealers to ensure they get full asking price before even taking the car in.

If you really want it - buy it. If not don't.
If they are confident its as described and at a good price ( and therefore will sell) , then why shouldn't they offer the car like that? You might just end up with a great deal - on the other hand you might get stiffed (unlikely if you have taken sensible precautions...)
If someone did that to me, I'd be half tempted provided it was a good deal for me, but I would certainly make sure that they would take the car back if it wasn't as described. I bought a DB9 unseen a few years ago and sent it back. Got a better one back for the same price!
It is a tiresome sales tactic though.

Walk away! If they treat you like this before you buy the car imagine what they will be like after you buy it (assuming you ever get to see and buy it)!!
I agree. It doesn't matter how much or how little you're spending on a car, there's nothing worse than being made to feel like they're doing you a favour. Find another dealernortho said:

+1. The dealer appears confident that he has an example coming in that he can move on fairly quickly and therefore feels no need to negotiate at this stage. If you think this is the one for you then put the deposit down (via credit card) with agreement on full refund if you are unhappy with anything. I went this route when I purchased mine and was not disappointed at the first viewing when the condition actually exceeded expectations. I would have a word with the dealer and explain that if you don't see the car you'll be walking away! Frankly after dealing with someone that unhelpful I don't think I'd want to buy a car from him. There's plenty of other 4.3 V8s out there so if that particular dealer won't accommodate you just walk away.
Hope that helps

The dealer I got my V12V from basically said the same:-
Car was coming in px.
Car priced to sell so no negotiating.
For me the car sounded perfect as it was a fantastic spec and colour. Coupled with it being quite rare at the time I put a deposit down on my credit card which would be fully refundable.
As Alex said above, on seeing the car for the first time it absolutely blew me away and the condition was fantastic. There was no question of cancelling and the car would have sailed out if the showroom so can understand the non-price negotiation stance.
Ultimately it depends on how much you want this particular car and if you'll be able to find another with similar mileage and spec.

Sound like the car is on sale or return.
I'd normally say walk a way.
Having said that I put £1k deposit on mine to hold it before I saw it because I kept losing cars to other buyers getting there first. I haggled on the phone before I put the deposit down.
If you are happy with the price make it a conditional refundable deposit based on driving and inspecting the car. I got another 17 "snags" sorted after agreeing the price.
