The paint chip thread got me thinking about those sickening avoidable first dents or scrapes that all of us with an unnatural love of cars suffer at some point usually in week three of our proud ownership of the new family member.
Thankfully 3 years on it has not happened yet to my DB9 but I still remember the near marriage break up that ensued when 'she who must be adored ' rewarded my taking her to dinner by smashing the passenger door of my red boxster into a stone wall whilst getting back into the car.Suffice to say I could not be consoled and just thinking about it produced steam from my ears for several months after.
Any similar experiences to get off yor chest - the therapy might be good for you;)

ok, I got a stone trapped in the sole of my shoe and on getting into the car managed to scrape it along the length of the door sill, including across the plaque. Of this, I am of course reminded every time I open the bl**dy door.

I parked in a really tight multi storey car park in Manchester at the weekend. Getting to the 5th floor without a scrape was a real struggle. But made it.

On the way out one of the down ramps must have been slightly steeper than the other. Reminded me of that top gear episode of super cars in car parks. I got stuck with the front end grounding out. After much toing and froing I managed to get it free with very little scraping...

Lessons learnt and won't be using that car park again!

Nowhere near as bad as putting a new shelf up in the garage, slightly too high. Put the car away (Z4M Coupe 3 weeks old) walked into the house and pressed the button for the garage door closer. The door took the shelf off the wall and threw it and everything that was on it and deposited it all on my new car. I felt sick & stupid in equal measures. New wing, door & mirror. More lessons learnt!

I love my cars to be near as perfect as possible, but, at the end of the day it is a car. I would rather use mine as intended than keep it locked away out of sight.

Yes I would be annoyed at myself or anyone else who damaged my car,but there are a lot more things in life to really get stressed about.

I guess it's keeping things in perspective.

not as bad as some, but my Vantage has its battle scars from 60K miles, trackdays, and multi storey car parks frown

under the front lip is scuffed
a few scratches in clear coat on rear quarter
scratch on door
peppered with chips on arches and front

Im still deciding this year whether to spend a few grand on paint in film and keep her a few more years or trade up to a 4.7 roadster...my bonus will make that decision for me LOL wink

First week of Ownership.......

Two euroboxes parked at the back of the drive, one V8V Roadster which needs hoovering (other vacum cleaners are available!) so instead of risking pulling the appliance over by stretching the pipe over the car I'll turn it around to get to the other footwell thinks me......paying very close attention to not hitting the euroboxes at the back of the drive whilst I reverse but not paying enough attention to the front bumper which has promptly caught on a two inch bolt that sticks out of the gate post leaving a three inch gouge out of the bumper! Of course I calmly stepped out said oops and got back in!

I had one pretty significant accident the second month I owned my V8V...about GBP 10k in repairs. Last year, a tanker truck drove into the back of me and pushed me into the car in front...another 12k of repairs. Now I don't stress about stone chips and scratches...my dealer does a good job of making it look like new at every annual service. I've had her almost five years now and I enjoy the ownership experience much more because I'm not as worried about hurting her...she's a tough girl.

Worst one I had was years ago my now ex-wife went out for the first time in a brand new SL I had bought and when she came back she trapped the seat belt buckle when she closed the door and put a hole in the door trim. She told me what had happened and I came out and inspected the damage and was a little upset at her carelessness and let her know. She then became upset so I told her to put the car away in the garage. As she was doing this and because of the state she was in she caught the bumper corner on the garage door surround....

A week or so later I got a puncture in the car so took the wheel off carefully myself and took it down to the local tyre bay in my van to be repaired. The guy repairing the tyre was careless with the wheel, marking the edge with the tyre removal tool then leaving the wheel face down in the floor when it was fixed for me to put in my van.

I never had any luck with that car.Thankfully at the time there was a waiting list for that particular model so I fixed all the damage and sold it by the time it was a couple of months old.

A Range Rover Vogue reversed into the side of my stationary V8V. I was sitting in it at time time, leaning on the horn. Obviously my horn, the RR reversing camera and parking sensors weren't enough to alert the driver. rolleyes

Scratched and dented rear wing fixed under the RR driver's insurance so it was annoying and inconvenient but free and nobody got hurt.

This thread is making me feel better, not just me that has damaged an Aston.
Have very small garage, Aston only just fits length and width ways. Had two mountain bikes mounted on a cycle rack on the end wall for at least 5 years. Bikes sit above bonnet of the car.
Sat in the house, heard a crash from the garage - immediateley had a sickening feeling. Opened up garage to see bikes on the bonnet.
Got it back from the bodyshop last week - had to take it back today as paint not perfect 'orange peel' effect.
Still at least I didn't have a Range Rover reverse into it / have a lorry hit etc.

A few years ago when a set of 17" alloys and some 40 profile Goodyear F1's, were over a grand,
wifey comes home from work after the first day of ownership, and three of them are kerbed to fk.
They're only wheels she said........

Feeling so much better listening to others horror stories.
Beginning to think this is a bit of a bloke thing as Lady Topaz comment was far too rational - have you no emotions woman - like the rest of us smile
Michael g was of course quite correct to point out that poor etiquette led to my
calamity - good to know there are still some old fashion tweed clad Aston owners left on Pistonheads and not just the tracksuit clad jumped up Astra drivers laugh

I was feeling down about a few stone chips on my new car, reading this list of heartache has got that into perspective very quickly.

I had my V8V about a month. My wife was driving near home in central london and spotting a gap in the traffic in the left hand lane promptly put her foot down to move into the inside lane and get to the front of the traffic lights. Unfortunately she hadnt spotted the Oxford Tube coach thundering up the inside lane. Sitting in the passenger seat as the coach hit us I thought i was gong to die, only seeing a very large tyre out of the passenger window....

Following lots of screaming (from me smile) we eventually pulled over to the side of the road. The driver of the coach appeared terribly upset by what looked like bad damage to the side of the car. Luckily after getting the car home (with me driving) and clearing the black rubber marks off the side of the car, the damage was pretty minimal with only a small dent to show over the rear rear arch.. a lucky escape and a valuable lesson: check your mirrors!!

Must admit as a result i am now not very precious about the car at all, and it has seen many a multi-story and Homebase car park! Completely agree that they are cars to be driven... however my eye does sometimes get drawn to small hollow about the rear wheel arch....

Fortunately not related to my V8V (when I had one) but my horror story concerns a brand new M3. Gave the one week old beasty it's first wash, started on roof then windows then bonnet - which is when something didn't feel quite right. TINIEST bit of grit on sponge - result, on comprehensively scratched bonnet. Lovely on a black car. One full bonnet and wing tops respray later and you genuinely couldn't see the work had been done but soul destroying on a new car. I'm a signed up member of the 'two bucket' brigade now!

PS. Confession time - I was so embarrased I may have told dealer that it was teenage nephew who washed car...............sorry Tom!
