I'm going to be in the market for an early Vantage as soon as I've sold a rally car and as such I'm keeping an eye on what is available. I'm amazed that private sellers seem to be asking the same as Aston main dealers in some cases! I would have thought a dealer would want around £3-5k from a car so would expect the privately sold ones to be a similar amount less...or am I missing something?

As always, depends how motivated a seller you have.

FWIW I would never sell a car private for the same as a trader's bid. If you're going to accept a trader style bid, you sell it to the trader to avoid dealing with the great unwashed.

Dealers may well have a bit more margin than that though.

You also have to factor in the current low point on the price curve. Unlikely you'll get anyone wanting to set new records (all cars are perfect after all smile).

main dealer would want 15% so would have 6-7k in a 42k car

You are missing something.

If private sellers could only get the dealer price minus markup, then there would be no private ones to buy, everyone would just give them back to dealers as its safer and they would get the same money that you are expecting to buy from a private seller at.

I speak from experience having sold a 2006 in February gone.

Dealers were offering me £36-37k for my car, and were going to put it up for £45k. I sold privately for £43k.

The early vantage is already massively depreciated now, so the lowest priced ones are always going to be similarly priced private vs dealer, if you find the right car with the right miles at the right money that is not necessarily going to be found at one or the other. If its right, and its priced right, get it bought.

the dealer would spend around 2-4k on prep, most of that on paint(front bumper, bonnet, rear wheel arches, wheel refurbs, before it goes on sale.
plus full years tax, mot, serviced if need, tyres, brakes etc.

Minor point, but isn't that how much they charge customers?

I doubt their cost price is as high.

06 cars with circa 20k miles are retailing for 41k and dealers are paying approx 33k for them. I think the spread is huge personally.

Any premium for black/black cars you guys think?

I wouldn't imagine so. I would expect it's one of the most common combinations.
