I know the subject of winter tyres has been exhausted in several threads in GG but I couldnt find one pertaining to this car.
I missed a couple of days last week but other than that have been driving my car with extreme caution on snow and icy roads. Whilst she skips a bit, so far no real problems but as I use it every day I can't help thinking I might be wise to invest.
So, I guess my questions are...

1) Will they make a discernible difference for day to day use?
2) If answer to above is yes then which should I go for?
3) How much should I expect to pay?

Sorry if this is a repost re winter tyres but I would appreciate an update or new advice.

I dont want to be complacent and screw up when I could have prevented an incident.

Thanks as always

Di

Or you could buy a skinny tyred runabout for less than a set of winter tyres.
It doesn't matter how careful you are, there's always the risk of somebody else driving too fast for the conditions (that's about 50% of people round here)and ruining your day due to poor judgement/lack of skill/crass stupidity.

Di, you are correct in that this has been discussed before and, if I recall correctly, specifically for the V12V. When I bought mine last November I raised the question of this forum and with the dealer. The dealer in turn went back to AM. The advice passed back to me was that in the UK AM did not recommend the need for winter tyres given the relatively small amount of use they would receive despite asking you to sign a disclaimer when you bought the car to say you understood what sort of car you were buying.

The cost at the time, for wheels and tyres, was significant. I also didn't like the wheels or the fact that they changed the ride height of the car and I wasn't willing to comprise the looks of my new beauty. As I have said before I have driven virtually 10000 miles in the past 12 months and have driven in all conditions save for the very worst of the snow (when a LR does the job admirably). I have not had a single incident (save for speeding !!) in that time and so feel justified in my decision and the advice that I was given.

Having said that Clorenzen has made his thoughts available too and he took a seperate route and it is a decision that he has not regretted either. Given that we have just experienced a second consecutive year of a reasonably long spell of cold weather you could argue that the future may be one it which it becomes essential to have winter tyres & wheels. For the moment, with a second car to use only in the worst conditions which last for only a short period, I will stick with my original decision. I drove the V12V this week when it was -5C and again no issues. If you only have one vehicle I would change the decision. It is my understanding though that it is not far up the temperature before the winter tyres become less stable and they deteriorate relatively quickly.

The standard V12V 19" wheel with Pirelli PZero Corsa, again I believe standard on the V12V.

Taking advice from above I have managed to acquire the use of a banana yellow 2004 Fiat Panda, total value about £1,000.

There goes my credibility in the office car park, but hey ho, I'd rather be laughed at than prang my p&j, and it will only be for days like last week, unless I get to like it of course. biggrin

Cant tell, they are too skinny wink Not even sure if they will do any better in the snow, but the risk element has been removed from my Aston. I'm actually liking this little car for its total practicality for trips to the shops or local dump. I fear snow chains or the like might just fall off.

Worth reading this - seems some insurers hike up your insurance premium for taking such precautions! Stupid but not surprising...

More worthwhile to read - http://www.smmt.co.uk/articles/article.cfm?article... Says ABI agree it won't affect premiums.
