Hey all,

Many of you will know I picked up my V8V at the weekend (59, 3k miles) however I have 2 issues that some of you may be able to advise on.

1) Where you slot the ECU in the dash, there is the clear bit above that says Engine and below that says Start; the below bit has fallen out and is just a loose bit of semi-circular plastic. I'm no DIY-er by any means so how should I go about sticking it back on, what should I use as light shines through from behind it so I don't want to get it wrong!

2) The brakes on my car aren't half squeaky! It's significantly worse when it's really cold, but when it's been wet they are completely silent (rain or having just washed), but otherwise it's almost impossible to slow down without them making a loud noise even 30 mins into a journey. I'm pretty sure this shouldn't be the case but I have absolutely no idea; originally I figured it might just be because they car hasn't really been used for the last few months (and has only covered 2900 miles in 13 months anyway) but it's still just as bad so that's not the solution.

Another bit of minor agro is that the first time I took my car into my garage (around a very, very tight left hander) I just clipped the front-left alloy, and although the mark is absolutely tiny just knowing it is there is infuriating but I don't think it's enough to be worth getting fixed - not that I even know if you can refurb a diamond turned alloy or how that works.

Everything else though I absolutely love!

Cheers

For 1) I would just take it back to Aston and ask them to do it.

2) Have you tried a few good "emergency stops" from high speed to clean the pads off? Obviously make sure that your speed is legal and it is safe to pull up quickly.

For 1 & 2 I would just go back to your dealer. My brakes squeaked most annoyingly and I could be wrong as it was some time ago but I think it was actually the handbrake that needed the adjustment.

Re the wheel, be very careful who you entrust. My diamond cut which looks the same as yours went back to my main dealer for a tiny kerbing. It came back worse than when it went in with what some on here said was bubbles in the lacquer. At 1st the dealer said tough and wanted me to fork out for a new wheel. The DP then saw sense and swapped my wheel over for one from his own demonstrator.

If you do have to get it done, now or in the future, make sure you take pictures and inspect the whole wheel closely on return.

repeated and hard breaking does often help with the squeaky brakes

The repeated heavy braking thing has never worked for me. I've got brake squeal. At the weekend, I thought I'd try again, so went out on a run and conducted some pretty heavy braking - eyeballs nearly popped out of my head. No better, in fact much worse.

Ok for the brakes it sounds like it needs the dealership to look at; and likewise if they are looking at that then they can fix the plastic bit that's fallen off. Pleased to hear I'm not alone with the issue and I will report back when I've had it looked at.

The wheel thing, having just cleaned the wheels, when clean you really can't tell there's anything there, just if you run your fingers over it and I can't get it to show in any photographs so it is just a whisker clipping as opposed to a proper kerbing - I'll leave it for now and nobody would ever know otherwise.

If you have broken the lacquer on the wheel you may find road salt etc attacks the alloy. Suggest you put some Rim Wax over the area or better still touch over the area with some clear lacquer ( available as a touch up stick from Halfords ).

I'll do the latter as soon as I can; thanks.

About the wheel, I agree that it's best to leave well enough alone. When I took delivery of my car (brand new), there was a tiny mark on one. Only I know it's there, and while I was tempted to have something done about it, repairing it always risks that it comes back an imperfect match to the others, or just not quite the same finish as originally. The mark is so tiny that it's just not worth the risk.

So I've left the wheel alone and it's not bothering me anymore, but one thing I have discovered is that the squeeking is getting worse and worse; I don't know if that's from being driven or from quite how cold it is at the moment. The good thing is that the dealership has agreed to look at it if required and what he said they'll do is something to clean off the pads which should fix it - of course while there the plastic bit can be stuck back onto the dash.

Not really a problem, just a bit annoying working out how to get the car to a dealership frown

Had the same problem with the squeaky brakes, took it back to dealer twice who finally sorted it. It's a common issue with the v8v

Sounds like back to a dealer then.

In other news I have just got a huge crack on my windscreen; 30 mph London and saw this large object flick up from the car a few ahead and down it came onto my windscreen making a nice hole and cracks about 3cm across - loud I tell you!

Anyway in theory a replacement is coming today via insurance company, if not then it will be tomorrow - seriously annoying!

Bad luck but it would have been alot more annoying if the object had hit the bonnet !!

That is exactly how I saw it; excess on insurance is £70 so could be significantly worse - almost more the hassle to have to get it fixed!

Seems they were wrong, just had a call to tell me it needs to go into a repair centre for a day. Absolute nightmare, no idea what to do, it's hard enough asking my boss to take 30 minutes off work let alone deal with having to get a car into a dealership on 2 separate days to have things fixed.

Car is now back from Grange, with brakes that no longer squeak - it's wonderful!

Also had them change the plates to my new one, put on some locking wheel nuts (cost something like £90 but absolutely needed for expensive diamond turned alloys for a car regularly parked on street), they did a flash for something that was needed from manufacturer, however couldn't just fix the thing in the dash and have had to order a new ECU surround which fingers crossed can be fitted while I wait next week - effort!

Looked up the price of the N420 alloys while there because I would oh so love them and when it came in at £4500 that got forgotten about, the V12 Vantage alloys 'only' cost £3,900 though... Hmmm no idea at what price I would want to change my alloys, but I don't think it would be one I could get to; not really complaining as the ones I have are absolutely lovely but just not my first choice.

Which Grange?

I was in Grange Welwyn today, so close to buying the lightning silver V12V, must resist for another few days!

Grange Welwyn indeed, I picked up the car yesterday at 5 and was looking at that car parked at the front - looked very very nice!!
