Why not drill through the plate, forget mounting it on anything and simply fit the clock through the plate itself and have the hands working away round the plate?

AARGH! You and the wife Pete, same idea. I suppose it doesn't need anything else it is a good piece of casting on its own. I didn't want to drill into it, I think I can add something to it, so long as I restrain myself from throwing everything and the kitchen sink at it, I think it'll work.

hahaha No no what you mean is that doesn't give you much stuff 'to do' :-)

So how about the clock face being the AM wings? joined with a simple bar?
OR perhaps the top section could be the dials from a dashboard? (speedo = hours Revs = minutes?)

Or the clock face is an alloy wheel design?

Dashboard dials...mmm, can see that. There's a direction. I'd better check DB9 interiors on Google.

The DB9 clocks work contra to each other though, so one would essentially be labelled and working backwards.

Maybe use the GT clocks ;-)

They are white backed and have red dials, and as stated above one can be hours and the other minutes. side by side at the top.

In fact.. how about using the DB7 manifold cover,, for starters it's plastic and therefore lightweight and I think it has a more funky look to it when off the car.

More skeletal like.

You can easily add the wings to it as per the DB9 design.

I think the wooden strips actually detract from the design, or at least in your mocks they appear to do so.

The other option, lol and thinking out of the box here on this design...

Using a 1/18th scale model of your choice Vanquish for example.. mount the clock mechanism (quartz) through the centre of the roof and hang the model on the wall. A think perspex dish can be the clock face so the model is visible at all times with subtle marking for the digits.

Ok, back to normal programming now. :-)

PHIL! Hello chap. Yes, good ideas. That's why I asked you to photograph your clock. It's still an option, but am trying to explore the DB9 clock route to try and be inkeeping with the item I've got to work with. It seems you're not alone, a few have said that the timber, no matter how rich it looks, just doesn't do it design wise.

Pete, two clocks, I see it from your link. It would fill out the space a little.

Here's a mock up of MDF treated to look like a rough cast intake manifold and sprayed silver:

That's a nice watch Pete. 12 & half grand though, craftsmanship I can only aspire to. I do like the complexity of the face arrangement, layered depth etc and incorporating the logo.

Yes tis a beautifull time piece.

The round clock face in the mock up would be mutch nicer if you managed to replace it with a piston ,logo hands sound cool.
May be you could do one with a baromiter to match or even incorporated
Guess it will always be Aston martin time in your hoose.

Some good ideas here. I think I could make about four clocks from what you've all suggested so far.

It will be easy to get lost, so I'll try and focus on the things you suggest that specifically pick up on the DB9 theme. So today's offerings, I hasten to add that these are just black laminate discs to give a feel for scale and colour:

This one's based around scaling up the DB9 analogue clock with a chrome bezel around it.

Good soil Pete suggested two dash dials, one for hours, one for seconds. I put a little perforated aluminium sheet to lift it a little, but you get the idea.

Glyn, thanks for the encouragement, I'm sure I'll need it, there's a long way to go to get this looking/feeling right yet.

I'd love one of these - they're great. I'm staring at a gap on my office wall which would accommodate one perfectly.

Prefer the single dial, a bit bigger.

Keep up the good work - brilliant.

Simonpieman,
I think you're right, a single disc, larger diameter, utilizing the depth I've got to make it look a little busier behind the chapter ring and hands.

Single face looks better to me unless you went much bigger for the two dial option i.e. edge to edge or overhanging....

Although another idea completely..... Perhaps you could have the engine cover as a pendulum?
(i'm just kidding now!)

RE - the watch link I added....yeah I thought 12K was a bit steep. 11.5K would have been fine but 12K is taking the mickey!!! (again I'm kidding! I would have a 09 car instead of an 07 if I had another 12k!)
:-)

Here's some more knock ups:

I had some antique copper, so routed out a wing motif and some square perforated 2mm aluminium sheet that I turned and formed into the back of the curve. The ali clock face and hands will definitely not be on the finished item, they show approximate positioning. I also added the cross brace over the V12 plate.

The top two intakes that sit directly behind the clock face really do invade that whole top area, so I'm now thinking that I could partially rout into them and give more space to do something three dimensional with the chapter ring and clock 'internals' which should give a better illusion of depth. What do you think? I'm reluctant to lose the intakes completely as it's supposed to suggest the V12 configuration. Photo without the cross brace this time.

I did away with the clock entirely for this one and tried to centralise the copper wing.

Edited for bad grammar.
