Any thoughts on a new noise?

This is going back dealers under warranty but maybe somebody else on here has experienced the same which will help when I'm explaining it to them.
Last week I started the V8V MY 2010 and drove away with the radio on. I quickly became aware of a slight whine noise that was rising with the car speed rather than engine speed. At first I thought it sounded like the whine associated with electric equipment such as an alternator interfering with the radio so switched that off. The noise was still there.
It sounded to me very much like it was in front of me and I wondered whether the speedometer could make such a noise? Anyway, I completed the 5 mile journey the noise was with me all the way, but disappearing when stationary at junctions. A few hours later I started the car again to return home but no noise all the way home.
This morning, the first time I've used it since, I started the car and pulled away from the drive. The noise was immediately apparent and even my wife noticed it. She thought it was coming from the back - diff maybe?
Anyway, we had drove about 3 miles, stopped in a service station for fuel then carried on. No whining noise after the stop, nor did it reappear throughout the day.
So, an intermittent whine which starts when the car is cold and first driven away, rises and falls with road speed rather than engine speed. If it was the diff would it be more than intermittent? Anybody else experienced it?
