Anyone have any idea what the problem may be or what might have caused it.
Is it a common problem?
It's just that I am in the market for early model and am currently identifying all the likely problems I might find.
The list appears to be quite long! Would prefer to be forewarned, especially if an engine is likely to blow at +30K miles (Didn't think that happened these days)

Let me get this straight...you saw an ad for a V8 Vantage that needs an engine rebuild and you're afraid that they may all have this problem? Seriously?
No, the V8 Vantage does not have any serious reliability issue that I've heard of. My V8 has done over 60,000KM and is going strong. Don't forget that there are hundreds of thousands of Jags and Range Rovers using a version of the same engine that are also in service all over the world. In fact, my V8 is in Dubai and has been through some extreme weather and track use without a single engine related issue to date.
If you're worried, get an extended warranty.

No, I'm just trying to establish if the "Aston" version of this engine may have known tendency to fail if not treated with respect by the previous owners. Just like to know what I am getting into!
Thanks for you input.
Hi Damit,
Was worried as well when i was looking for a V8.
I have currently got mine on the marlet if you are interested on the below link.
Fully history etc and a brand new clutch!!!
Also this has been fully looked after by Rick and his team at Derby Motor Services who is highly recommended
throughout the Aston Martin world.

you may find 40 or so of us on here with Vantages that dont have blown engines
still statistically insignificant out of the many thousands sold so far
actually, I would say, in 4 years/50K miles of ownership, its the first one Ive heard of on any of the AM forums
so buy it if you think you have a bargain and are handy with the spanners..the most it needs is a rebuild and a few new parts, so its mainly your own labour
if you are thinking of paying someone £100 an hour to rebuild for you however, i would just get a working model, it will work out cheaper I suspect

ANY engine may have a tendency to prematurely fail if not looked after by previous owners
+1 This!!!The engine iteslf is fine but if owned by muppets then it will fail.
Get the engine built by a specialist and as long as you warm her up before giving it the beans and get her services when required then the engine will be fine.
not a common problem at all, we are currently have one in with a problem on the engine and this only the second in three years with actual engine damage and both have been track cars, the only common problems with this engine is fead belt noise, thermostat failing at around four years and some cars suffering with oil leaks from the front timing cover and this is in varying degrees from just needs a tighten of the securing bolts to in limited cases replacing of the front gaskets,
