£20 off ebay. Although Aston have introduced a new kit to get around the problem.

A similar problem occurs with the latest iPods and it isn't restricted to the Aston unit either - our Merc iPod interface won't charge my wife's Namo but will charge my older iPod. Nice of Apple to change the way the charging works!

MB have a little plug-in adaptor but the price is a bit steep at £40! I'm sure there must be cheaper equivalents...

Note - this adaptor doesn't say that it works with 3GS ... and indeed it doesn't ...

Best advice I was given at the time, was to get an old iPod and simply leave it connected in the car. Also gets you around the 32Gb limit with your iPhone - so you can actually get most / all of your iTunes onto the old style iPods.

Personally I prefer the external hard disk that I leave plugged in to the USB port

It's more that I want to be able to charge my iPhone4 from the adaptor

So will those adaptors work for charging?

Does anyone have a solution for charging an iPhone 3gs? My charger seems to work fine when inserted in to the socket in the boot, but not at all with the one in the cabin?!

We use the USB port with the standard apple cable to charge the iPhone 3G (works for the iPhone 4 too). This won't play music at the same time from the iPhones though.

Every time after I've done that and plugged the iPhone 3GS back into the iPhone port for music it's said "iPod Unreadable". It then takes a while (I mostly left it a day or so I think) for it to then accept the iPhone again although the last time I did it it actually now says that for any iPhone or iPod i plug in and just no longer accepts an iPhone :-( Grrrr... will be taking it into the dealer next week. Dealer reckons it might just need a new cable.

You need this little adaptor between the line out and the phone socket and then it works. I will check the name of it and re-post. Bought it in the Apple Store in New York.

This might be the solution ....

Scosche passPORT Charging Adapter for iPhone 3G

http://store.apple.com/us/product/TS696LL/A?fnode=... (US $19.95)

http://store.apple.com/uk/product/TS696LL/A?fnode=... (UK £19.95)

"Now you can charge your iPhone 3G, fourth-generation iPod nano, and second-generation iPod touch through your vehicle’s integration system. Simply attach the Scosche passPORT to the cable and you are ready to go. Supports audio and charging for the iPhone 3G, second-generation iPod touch, and fourth-generation iPod nano."

Reviews seem to suggest results can be a bit variable though ....

Slight aside, but Apple noted to all "certified" accessory producers that they were removing f/w charging on the iPod line ages ago. So not really Apple's fault.

It still meant that the people who made the accessories had to redesign their product and then put it back through testing. You can't just swop the wires round and say 'there you go'. Plus it still needs to work with older units too.

Plus that assumes that when you buy a new iPod you will buy new kit to plug it in to! I'm not about to ask Merc or Aston to supply me the latest version of the iPod interface (at who knows what price!) because Apple decide to change the wiring of their interface plug to change the power feed. The fact Apple sell the adapters through their own shop suggests even they realise it was going to cause big problems for people with older iPod interface equipment ...

Technology of any brand changes all the time. How come some accessory manufacturers didn't get tripped up?

To my knowledge, you've always been able to charge iPods via USB or FireWire. USB being more widespread, Apple dropped FireWire charging. The only accessories affected are those that didn't cater for USB charging (or charging either/or). In the circumstances, I'm not convinced that's Apple's fault...

They stock the adapters in the knowledge that many may find it a more cost effective solution than replacing the incompatible accessory.

Does anyone moan when the case for their old iPod/phone/etc doesn't fit the new one?

Some manufacturers only make ipod accessories and so change pretty quick. Car manufacturers though don't look at the ipod as something that makes the difference between a sale or no sale. I'm fairly sure B&W update their stuff pretty quickly where as Aston need to spend their development money somewhere else. Alot of car manufacturers are still sticking with the aux-in port only, probably to try and avoid this issue of having to keep up with someone else.
