Based purely on your question, I don't think you have an AM! laugh

In that case, I'm not sure that any BM with decent performance will be that much cheaper to run. What Aston?

Me neither. You'll be talking a few hundred quid a year difference IMO, perhaps 10%-20% tops.

In direct answer, I'd have to say "don't". But if you have no choice, you'd likely get better options in the BMW section.

Have you considered one of the newer Jags as an alternative?

Well, if you must. Z4 coupe is probably the closest when it comes to footprint and size (2 seats). The straight six is a great engine afterall.

Datsun Nissan 370Z? Clearly not up to Aston standards in most respects, but a fun drive.

I have to agree. I really dont know Beamers but to get comparable in the perfomance/luxury to a MY07 V8V, you have to be looking at an M5/M6/AMG55. A quick cig-packet calc based on 10,000mi per year, 25mpg for the Aston and say 36mpg for the Beamer and the Aston has to be roughly £1500/yr more expensive. Also, deprciation cant be taken into account. One could also look at Nissan GT-R but I suspect what one would save on service and petrol, one would almost certainly pay more in terms of insurance.

AM
Insurance £1000
Road Fund £ 400
Service £ 900
Fuel £2000
Tracker £ 200
Total £4500

BM
Insurance £ 600
Road Fund £ 400
Service £ 700
Fuel £1300
Tracker £ 0
Total £3000

So, if you really must cut your motering costs by £1500 - so be it. A necessary evil. If you dont, is it really worth it?

Well acknowledging that everybodies circumstances are unique, I run the AMV8V, a BMW Z4 2.5 auto (wifes car) and a Merc CLK 2.7 D (business car)

The aston only costs another £200 per year to insure over either of the other 2. The Z4 gets 22 MPG average (95% town use)but my sons Z4 3.0 manual gets 26mpg.

With the difference in Tax the fixed running costs are around £400 per year more for the Aston.

The real difference will be made up in how many miles you do - what do you use the AM for? If you only do a low mileage would it not be worth considering getting a small economical car with zero VEL and high MPG and keeping the AM for fun? With an admiral multi car insurance you can cut the insurance costs right back.

Just a thought, it may not necessarily be a dilema about a BMW or an Aston, but how can you keep the Aston and still afford to motor?

Bottom line and i guess you already know this, nothing else will give you that Aston feeling. Best of luck whatever you chose to do though.

Our AM costs the same to insure as the TVR and my Disco 3 !

If you add depreciatiion into the mix (and the fact that a 3-4yr old Aston has done most of it already, then surely it can't really be that much cheaper !? particularly when you know you are going to get a low par price for the Aston in the current market and could well get landed with something unknown in a new purchase.

Ours will be the last car to go from the drive I reckon!

Cheers,
Matt.

Forgive me but I think its strange that after being on PH for over two years, you suddenly post with very abrupt questions that actually have no substance. You dont say if you want comparable performance, what price range. Two door, four door.... nothing.

I could tell you about my previous 335i but have no idea if its the sort of car you are considering.

Some clues might be nice.

Don't.

Apart from that I am afraid I am lacking in ideas.

Which BMW for example? Why a BMW? What will the new car be used for ?
