Hi

I am looking to purchase a Vantage Roadster. I've only test driven the 4.7, please can I have your views on the relative difference between the 2 engines? I want to be sure I make the right decision.

Thanks

If its a Roadster, its has to be the 4.3
4.3 sound better / louder than the 4.7!
Its important when the roof is down!

No doubt the owners of 4.7's will be along in a bit with minor technical reasons as to why they consider the 4.7 better (but quieter!) whistle

As far as I know, the 4.3 and 4.7 both have the V8, so sound the same. I think you are getting confused with the V12! wink

I drove several 4.3 and 4.7s back to back, to be honest I was only interested in a Coupe. I had heard there were differences but couldnt accept having to buy new. As soon as I had the first comparative test drive, I knew i couldnt go down the 4.3 route, the 4.7 is leaps and bounds about the 4.3, not just my opinion, fact! As for sound, get those baffles permanently opened and they both sound awesome...

I test drove 8 roadsters of different years back in May.
The noise thing is different in a roadster as you have little or no roof wink
The 4.3's are louder but only at the bottom end of the rev limit (especially with fuse 22 pulled).
Most the roadsters are sport shift.
I decided to stretch to a 4.7 as I felt the following out weighed the 4.3's noise and lower price wink
40 BHP more
Better centre console with proper ipod integration
Better suspension (and better again with the Sports Pack)
Smoother Sport Shift changes
Clear rear lights fitted easily

On the down side the 4.7's sat nav is hard drive based so no upgrade to full postcodes is available AFAIK (unlike the DVD based system on the 4.3 rolleyes )

BTW which ever you go for look out for the middle roof bar wearing the roof from the inside out, most the ones I looked at had it to some extent. I got mine reworked by the dealer.

Thanks for replies so far.

I agree about the noise being important with the roof off and have read about fuse 22. Favourite at the moment is 4.7 manual with sports pack. Can anyone tell me why the 4.3 is louser/has a better noise?

The 4.7 has a minor modified exhaust to muffle the sound a tad more, even with fuse22 out on both

HTH dear! biglaugh

An AM doesnt need to be loud to get attention and admiration! Quietness fits his elegance better!

Thats twice in one day, that someone has been under the mis-apprehension that Aston's are quiet. Never have been. Has anyone heard Aston V8's from the 80's and 90's? If you ever get to hear V8LM's car you'll know it sounds like the God of war roaring!.

Need XXXAngelXXX to come along and tell which of his Astons were quiet!

Nothing wrong IMO with hearing an Aston, they have a glorious sound.

ALL sportscars should be heard. Much more than the econoboxes around them. And it's why Teslas should be banned (that, and for being a st and very expensive Elise).

Sportscars should assault all the senses.

if you can afford the later car then go for it...whats the difference these days?

cheapest 4.3 roadster £55k ish vs cheapest 4.7 for £80K ish?

if the 40bhp and trim changes are worth £25K to you then go for it

depends on personal circumstances I guess ....if I had a 4.3 roadster now, and £25K cash in my pocket,

Id probably buy another car for £25K, a hot Caterham or similar for trackdays ...depends on requirements, how big your fleet is etc

A 4.7 is hands down the better car - drive them both back to back and you will see. The 4.3 might be a little louder but its not much and trust me a 4.7 with fuse 22 out is certainly not quiet - mine howls the town down!

The only real reason to pick a 4.3 is if you cant or dont want to afford the cost of a 4.7.

Small pyrrhic victories matter when owning a 4.3! Took a day before someone points out the real reason for owning a 4.7

Good call. I've had 2 4.3s and now have what you've described. The 4.7 is, IMO, far ahead of the 4.3 in almost all respects (including noise - I didn't notice much difference when I changed). I found that the 4.3 had to have its nuts rev'd off to access the performance, which is fine if you like driving like that all the time. Sometimes though, you'll be in a more relaxed frame of mind, when the better torque lower down makes a hell of a difference to higher gear acceleration. The Sportspack suspension is worth every penny too.

Edited to change my numerical dyslexia!

From my recent experience in buying my roadster the cheapest half decent 4.3 roadster is £60k, I paid £71k for my 4.7 so the difference isn't £25k wink

Once you have driven them back-to-back you won't want a 4.3

If you can get past the colour combination this is very cheap for a 4.7
