Having bought a 4.7 V8 Coupe with sports pack last year, I couldnt see myself in anything else. I really thought I would hang on to it for years and years to come, my dream car finally in the garage, putting a beam on my face every time i opened the garage door, just to see it, let alone drive it!

With that in mind, only 4 months after purchase i was offered a test drive in a DBS. Always keen to drive mid to high range cars, I said yes. Now prior to driving, my expectations were that the shape and style were on a par with the Vantage, each to their own and all that. Unfortunately I was horrified to find that mindset wiped out within minutes of firing up the DBS engine and hitting the open road. Having driven or owned a good majority of the supercar range (not hypercar of course), I had found a car that I can honestly say was amazing in every way. That might sound over the top but I really did feel I had put on the perfect slipper. The test drive ended in mixed emotions, but really I drove home gutted by my experience.

For 12 months I have had the DBS devil chewing at my ear, I have found myself trying desperately to talk myself out of it, after all I had a wonderful Vantage, stunning in looks, stunning in sound and a joy to drive. I have recently had it detailed to a degree where it actually looked liked a Black treacle liquid finish, added N400 sills and lenses which I personally think finished off the car yet still i was hounded.

Teasing myself with Autotrader and PH Classifieds weekly, my desire for that DBS certainly didn't lapse and when my dealer offered an Aston range test drive at Millbrook in May, for me even the V12 didn't turn my head at all, I only had eyes for one car. Driving the full range, from V8 to Rapide, the DBS remained my 'perfect slipper'....

Three weeks ago, having finally spotted a car in the exact spec I sought, a March 2010 registered Quantum Manual Coupe with not a lot more than delivery miles, I am thrilled to say I gave into temptation and paid the dealer a visit last week.

The 110 miles home following its collection this lunchtime was without a shadow of a doubt the best driving experience i have had to date, the car is simply awesome. As my Vantage disappeared into the dealer compound I said mental 'goodbye' and for a moment, sadness seeped in. Within 5 minutes of turning that V12 engine and hitting the country lanes, any memory of my previous dream car had gone....

Rob. Great post and well done for being brave.
I'm finding that when I was younger it was easy to hanker after a better car and when the tine came to change it was easy. However, once you get past a certain level of car, the "need" for change diminishes. If you get my drift.

Very interesting post. Am currently weighing up either DBS or California as a daily.....obviously different cars in many ways but can't think of anything else that I fancy as much to do the job...... Think Cali is a better drive, but DBS simply gorgeous. Lucky choice to have of course, but tough one....although maybe not on this forum

Many congratulations! Until you made the change, we had the same car, which I love. So far, I've had no desire to change, but I've always loved the DBS, and I haven't driven one. Yet...

I was tempted by hammerhead silver and quite liked quantum too but ended up where I started: black of course smile

Too bad the DBS costs so much more, or I would do it too. Although, I'm really happy with the Vantage so I can't say it bothers me at all.

In my case, a 4.3 and a 4.7, then DBS... Now hopefully no more spending! biggrin
