No problems with my V8VR for ages, and then 2 minor glitches surface at the same time irked

The car has developed a squeal from the nearside of the engine. It sounds like it's a belt, but is it a known problem with a simple fix? Also, the coolant fan is on almost from firing up the engine, and appears to stay on until the motor is switched off. It is hot here but not that hot (high 30's).

Ideas?

belt and idle pulley should fix the squeak . have you got the a/c switched on?
the fan runs when the a/c is on if its really hot and the car isnt moving at good speeds

Hi as your car is a 2008 it should have the latest modification to the fead belt easy to check, when looking at the pulleys apart from the main auxiliaries there are three idle pulleys one ribbed and two smooth one of the smooth pulleys should have shoulders acting as a guide for the belt, (if i get a chance tomorrow i will add some pictures) if it has then t has the latest pulley mods, if so any moisture from washing, raining can cause this fault and is very simple to rectify, don't laugh but a squirt of talcum powder (dms special tool no3) will probably sort it, easiest place to apply is when stood at the front of the car the right corner of the engine you will be able to see the belt with engine running apply a bit of talc above the belt, make sure fingers etc are kept out of the way of moving parts,

Thanks for the replies chaps. No, the aircon wasn't on and the fan came on before the engine had got up to operating temperature. Rick, any idea on this? As for the pulleys, I don't think either of the smooth idlers has a shoulder, although a pic would help to be sure I'm looking at the right ones. If I have to use dms special tool no 3, any particular fragrance? laugh
