Can anybody give me an idea of what a main dealer will charge for a first 12mth service on a 4.7 V8 Vantage. I dont want to have to call around loads of dealers to haggle out the best price if I can avoid it, but I certainly dont intend to get ripped off by accepting the initial price from my local dealer if its off the mark.

No office to the great Indi's out there but I am only interested in main dealer prices, thanks.

£900-1200 I reckon

..depends on where you live as to what the labour rate is

if its a 5.5 hour service @ £100+vat per hour or 5.5 x £150+vat per hour

just over 2 gallons of oil - £100 ish

filters/disposal - £30

thats about it really - its mostly labour

there used to be a website that reported main dealer labour rates, you put the manufacturer in, your location and it brought up your nearest 5 dealers and their rates....buggered if I can find it though frown

...I remember being in the same boat with mine back in 2007, found this site and the central London dealer was £150 ph and my local in Brentwood (at the time) Grange were £90 odd ....

Ouch - I had rather assumed £600 would be the mark... Still youve given me what I was looking for which is a nice wide range of good-bad prices. Guess my target is to get it under £750 then! smile

What gets done that's significantly different to, say, a top end Mercedes, or any other modern car? First services are pretty well just oil & filter changes, and a spray of the door hinges, on most cars these days, and usually take under an hour.

That's right. The first service is essentially an oil and filter change and a few checks over the car-probably an hour max to do the lot.

Mine was £635.46 ( here).

Was on a 4.3 (shouldn't make any difference) and was a couple of years ago (which might make a difference!).

2nd service was £1k last year ( here).

first service is 3 hours labour ,

First year service (@6240miles) on a 4.3 N400, done last July, was £652.14+VAT. Most expensive bit being 11 litres of Castrol RS synthetic oil at £184+VAT

actually just found a bill from 3 years ago - only got charged £110+vat for oil, so not too bad...even if I had to buy it myself its still £45 ish and Id need 3 containers of it...it was other stuff bumping the bill up to the £800 mark

depends on which dealer it is I guess ...even 3 hours labour is £540 inc vat at some expensive places

ok got a quote today from my local main dealer.

Their first offering was £715 inc oil, parts, labout and vat, which I swiftly rejected. They called back within 15mins and reduced the price to £608 (inc oil reduced from £164 to £129) or £479 if I bring my own oil.

A quick google for the Castrol Edge sport 10W60 shows it can be bought at halfords (on special offer at the moment - buy 4ltrs get 1lrt free) for a total of £90.97 inc vat for 11ltrs).

So price now stands at £479 + £91 = £570 all in (with my own oil).

breakdown is as follows :

£300 labour (includes a 20% discount apparently)
£80 "parts" - err what parts are needed besides an oil filter!?!?!?!?
£28 service pack - im guesssing this is no more than some wd40 and some screenwash!
£71 vat on all of the above
£91 own oil from halfords on promo

Thoughts?? Whilst £570 seems good compared to the postings above its clear a quick haggle can save considerable money. I reckon there might be more to be saved if I dig into the "parts" and the service pack costs... Cant possibly be £108 of goods in there...

I know its an Aston but this just feels like they are taking the p*ss because they can. I will feel no shame in taking my own oil in and whats more I shall be asking for the 0.5ltrs back after the service is done as they quoted only 10.5ltrs in the service.

They have to pay for that shiny showroom somehow!

I suppose only a few years ago the car would have been in every 6 mths and needed a load of warranty work. Now they (hopefully) run pretty fault-free so there's little chance for the dealer to extract revenue from customers.

youd be surprised how exepensive the OE filters are...they are not £6.99 from halfords wink

that sounds fine to me ...certainly no more expensive than most premium German saloons these days

...Ive had Audi dealers charge more than that for a routine service

thats if you want the dealer stamp in your book of course - you could save more in labour using an indy

Maybe it is also how the recoup the cost of the training?

This may give you an idea of prices on a 10k/1yr service...

Guys you are right the are savings to be had , but remember the dealers are given a set time by the factory to carry out the service , the parts are order from the factory , that are not cheap and make very little mark up .

The Service is the one of the only times the dealer can make a profit , what about all those problems you have had with the cars that are covered under warratny ,Aston pay very little plus never really pay enough time for the repair , so most of the time, the dealer comes and picks your car up , spends hours on it to sort a rattle out lets say , then gets it cleaned then gets it delivered back to you.
Now how much do you think the dealer gets paid for that. about £25 , but that rattle has cost the dealer massively a drivers wages to collect and deliver, a chase car, fuel, running cost,a valeter, plus a highly skilled cost a small fortune trained tech , spending ages trying to find those rattles.

So just remember those times , when ringing into to your dealer , because if you start haggling to much, or all go to indpendance for cheap servicing , guess what , the dealers will start shuting down.Belive me you dont what that because the knock on effect is massive.
