Swapping wood for piano wood on dah and door caps
Discussion
I'm looking at a Db9 but decided that i dont like the wood http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1568607.htm as much as i like the piano wood http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1429877.htm
Is it possible to swap them, any idea of cost.
The first car is the one i fancy, apart from the wood!

Well, if that's what you like, do it, but personally I think that 'piano black' is just a euphemism for shiny plastic, and looks like nothing special. Great for car manufacturers when fashion allows them to charge more for a finish which is much easier and cheaper to make. Ok it featured on Bond's DBS, but once you are over that, so what? The veneers on an Aston look really classy, and if I was looking for a DB9 I would prefer ones with veneer and if possible the veneered door cappings.
If you must do this, I suggest that you hedge your bets by keeping the veneered parts.
Edited to say - that first Volante looks terrific but the veneer pack - with both centre panel and door cappings - to me is a very big part of its appeal. A convertible always imho looks better with more beautiful and tactile finishes than a coupe. Are they maybe needing cleaned or polished up? Also, I would have thought that modifications from original spec always affect resale value in due course. I think that you would be best advised to keep looking till you find one with the spec you want.
If I were you however I would think about this over a fine bottle of Pouilly Fume and then go and have another look at the veneers. (Get your wife to drive!) If I can find any illustrations which make my point I will post them.
Best of luck. Lovely cars.
Edited further to say - you notice that Safwat have taken four pictures of the interior alone, lingering over the superb finishes, and emphasizing the delicious contrast between the grey leather and the mahogany veneers. DON'T DO IT! That car, by the way, would look the total dog's bks if it were properly detailed.

The more i look at the wood the more i accept it suits the volante. The car isnt trying to be a le mans race car, it is a GT and thats how it should look.
I'm going to have a look next week and try and make my mind up, also going to make the trip to Oakham to look at 555's Volante.
Cardigan, you make me feel guilty for just looking at the car and thinking it looks nice. I havent considered the grey leather / wood contrast, I do like the way that the wood lights up in the sunshine, something black just cannot do.
The Sofwat car is actually a clients car that they are selling. Unfortunately this means that there is next to no discount available (£500 or so!) It does seem to meet most of my requirements though, just need to check it has bluetooth fitted, not sure a parrot stuck on the dash is the way to go!

I feel guilty about making you feel guilty! But I am convinced it's the right thing. Aston manage to achieve a lovely natural satin finish on their veneers, but like anything else it will pick up fingerprints dust and greasy marks. If it were cleaned and looking as new you might feel more positive about it.
I think it is a lovely combination - Tungsten is probably the most popular Aston colour. When it is dirty it can looks pretty flat and grey, though no DB9 is ever going to look bad. If however it is immaculate and polished it has got depth and is probably the best colour of all. Hence my comment that if the car was the subject of a proper polish and detail it would be stunning, the subtlety of the metallic paint would be seen against the veneer and leather, and I am sure you would be won over.
I would say that the Top555 car has had a very good polish already, which is even more crucial on a black car.

Hi I know of a frends DB7 who has just has the wood coverted/painted to Piano Black.
The cost was around the £500.00 mark. With this in mind a can't see that it would be a great deal more as the DB9 has less trim pieces to remove & refit.
Might be an idea to give Chiltern Aston a call as they carried out the work.
01442 833177 ask for Steve Moore.
They are based in south east & I beleive are now an authorized repairer for the newer models.
