Quick one, but when changing pads at one end, would you ordinarily bleed the brakes as part of the process...?

Hi Andy, I would not normally consider this necessary,

Thanks Rick.

Went out in the car after it had been stood for a couple of weeks in cold weather (doubt this is relevant - never has been before and it spends a lot of time outside). Pedal was very soft, to the point where I was concerned it was going to stop (it did!).

Took it to nearest dealer. Rear pads were changed (I knew they were getting low. Was intending bringing it to you until this. Never had any warning lights yet though), but they noted the pedal was still feeling soft. They bled the brakes (charged for, which is fair enough, though a bit steep!). Picked it up but it's still not as good as it used to be.

It's going back to them, but a bit non-plussed as to what might be causing it. Car stops, but the pedal feel's nothing like as good as previously...

Andy after new pads the pedal can be a bit soft especially if there is any wear on the discs, brake pads require bedding in, another possible issue is one pad is stuck, so instead of sliding backwards and forwards in the guide it flexes instead, there are other possible cause such as wheel bearings,

you describe the pedal as soft, is the travel the same as before, with the engine running if you keep pressure on the pedal does it slowly drop, then press the brake pedal release and again press it in quite a quick motion on the second depression does the pedal appear to stop higher up, also any strange noises, pulling or vibrations,

The bleed procedure even when using amds or wds if not followed exactly can leave or introduce air into the system, we sometimes have to bleed a second time to make sure we have a perfect pedal, even when great care is taken,

Thanks Rick.

No pulling or odd noises that I noticed since the pads were changed. Initial travel felt longer than before. If quickly releasing then getting back on it, it firmed up/had shorter travel.

This was all on a short drive though really. I'll take it out again at the weekend and have a better look.
