AMV8 Vantage tyre choice
Discussion
I've had a 2008 V8 Vantage for nearly a year now, its done 11,000 and I think the rear tyres are feeling a bit worn. I was wondering whether most of you simply replace them with original spec, or are there other tyres that people feel are better. I do 'normal' driving - so tyres for track days etc are of no concern to me. Thanks
im on my 3rd set of RE050 OE Aston spec compound
I have no reason to change to be honest - they are more than adequate for fast road use in our varied British weather.
For track use, or dry road then the optional Pirelli Corsas are excellent (drove on them at Millbrook)...of course they are road legal semi-slicks, with all that entails;they wear out quicker, dont like standing water, dont like under 5 degrees in Winter etc etc
so no point in me running those daily ....If it was a trackday car Id have 2 sets of wheels n tyres ...and have both of the above
of course, you can experiment if you like and go and fit something that wasnt developed for the car....but then you have to ask yourself, what type of driving you are doing, and are you a sufficiently experienced chassis set-up engineer to really evaluate a completely different set of rubber, bearing in mind the AM engineers spent weeks on selecting the compound in the RE50s for the car
Most people change tyres either to save money or improve some aspect of performance ...personally I dont find the RE050s lacking in performance anywhere to make me bother
..and yes, Ive done trackdays, and 45K miles now in all weathers ....the RE50s were more than fine on track too; progressive at the limit, and not so soft that they fell apart after 3 laps
dont get fooled when you read of the odd person whos just fitted the fave tyre they had on their old car, replacing some worn out ones and then proclaiming "the difference is amazing" errrr...of course it is, youve just swapped some worn out tyres for brand new ones ...just about any brand new ones of the correct size/rating would feel "better" than a knackered set LOL
...sorry for the long waffle - its a pet rant of mine, when friends tell me they can feel the nuances in tyre handling characteristics because they fitted "brand x" and paid £50 more per tyre, yet theyve only been for a drive around the local bypass and a run to Tescos in the car LOL

I totally agree, my OE tyres are fantastic, she has loads of grip in the wet, and great on track, low noise, and great wear rates, I get about 12k out of the rears and 22k out of the fronts, which is nice. Interestingly I was at a Porkie dealer on Saturday and they have moved back to these Potenzas for their cars now, as the other choices were poor in various conditions.
Have a look here for example:
Rear tyres £202
Front tyres £189
I have used them before and no problems, you have to add for delivery and fitting and disposal of old tyre is usually around £10 per corner.
It gives you a good negotiating price to start with.
Here is a main dealer:
Front £211 & Rear £223 fitted

i had a set of michelin ps2 installed
while they are terrific - in retrospect I probably should've fitted the standard RE050As.
These look thick - here's a picture for comparison
The back tires which are the same size. The front ones are 245s.

Why do you feel that you should have stuck with the RE050's?while they are terrific - in retrospect I probably should've fitted the standard RE050As.

I've just fitted the ps2 Michelins. So far I am very pleased, but as bogie has pointed out, the differene might just be down to comparing worn tyres with new ones. I'll know in about 6 months, or so when the Michelins get a bit worn down.
