I managed to get hold of some LHD headlights for my move to Germany. Has anyone got any idea how easy/difficult it is to change the whole headlight unit yourself? I'm reasonably mechanically minded and handy with a spanner but I've not managed to find any decent service manuals online to give me an idea of how long it'll take.

Local German AM dealer wanted nearly 500 euros to do the job, so I'm guessing it's a fairly in-depth job. It obviously requires removing the front wheels and all the wheel arch linings but just curious as to what else is involved.

Anyone got any experience of this?

Thanks.

I can't help with the technical question, but can you give me a hint as to how you found the LHD headlight units? I assume you sourced them at a reasonable price.

Hi Richard, it is not a particularly difficult job,

As you thought remove wheel and wheel arch liner, remove lower part of air filter box, and then the air filter, remove bolts securing upper part of air filter box, carefully disconnect map sensor wiring and withdraw the rest of the air filter box, disconnect wiring from lamp, you will see the three bolts securing lamp remove these, disconnect washer pipe this has a small c shaped clip that secures the pipe to the lamp this needs removing, withdraw lamp, on fitting the replacement lamp, you will see the adjustment can be altered where the securing screws for the lamp fit the piece the bolts go into adjusts to align the lamp to the wing aperture, just reverse instructions to refit and then the dipped beam will need aligning by a garage or testing station, just leave the bulb covers off the adjuster are on the back of the lamp, 2 or 3 hours should see the job done any problems let me know.

As always, a perfect response from Rick - thanks very much.

Managed to source the LHD lights through astonmartinbits.com.

They're second hand but considerably cheaper than new from AM. Just hope they work ok once fitted.

Thanks again Rick.

Now that was awkward! The first light took about 3 hours, second one only about an hour, once I knew what I was doing!

They work a treat, although think they're aiming a bit high. Does anyone know off the top of their head what the adjustment height should be, and from how far away when aiming etc? Also, which screws actually do the adjustment - is it the rear mounting screws that hold the unit in place that get adjusted?

It's -1 degree. One screw does X position and one does the Y position, you will need it aligning on a proper headlamp alignment kit.
