I have to take the DB9 out of the garage for the first time since early October, its been trickle charged and the tyres over inflated so should be ok BUT do I turn it over on the starter first to get some oil around it or just start it ?

I seem to remember Rick saying floor it and it wont start - was I dreaming ? imagine flooring it and the first start after 4 months makes it bounce off the limiter stone cold !!!

I started my V12 yesterday for the first time since well before Christmas (we have been away out of the country). I didn't touch anything except the starter button, waited till it fired and then just left it to find its own level. I didn't touch the throttle pedal at all. After a few minutes it settled to a nice "fast" tickover, waited until the temp reached N then went for a drive, no probs. BTW mine was left on a trickle as well

Hi Dave yes you can obtain oil pressure without starting the engine, I am currently writing a tutorial covering all current models for long term storage, the details arer in your handbook in the maintenance section, under the heading recommissioning after storage,

1. sit in the car as normal fully depress accelerator to the floor and hold,
2. turn ignition on
3. press and hold starter button.
4. engine will turn over without starting as fuelling s disabled
5. when oil pressure is obtained,( oil pressure warning light goes out)
6. release starter button.
7. turn off ignition and release starter
8. then just start as normal,

manual cars will need clutch pedal pressing at same time as accelerator as you would on normally starting car,

We use this procedure daily, whenever we carry out an oil change, so really is a tried and tested procedure

I did the pedal-to-the-floor thing on my V8V recently after several weeks of storage. Must admit it was a bit scary -- visions of instant redlining if it didn't work -- but, of course, it worked perfectly.

Rick...question.....is it a good idea to always start an Aston during cold weather like this (well at least first start of the day)as I beleive a fair ammount of engine wear is due to cold start ups and the lack of lubrication ?

Michael although not necessary, because of the difference with fully synthetic oils it certainly will not do any harm and you are correct most engine wear is on start up, so getting the engine around first will always help,
