I agree with his sentiment. Couple of thingshttp://www.marketingmagazine.co.uk/News/918313/
- I'm not sure that Ferrari's "line extensions" haven't hurt the "brand". They license some right old tat, and there's something increasingly....chavesque about the "brand" as a result. Don't get me wrong, they make some great cars (still not convinced about the California mind). But have Ferrari branded weather stations and underpants really, really added to the brand value and kept the company afloat?
I suspect it more likely that cross platform sharing (engine and gearboxes for a start, across Maser and Alfa) has been of more benefit. And they've done that job well.
- Aston seem to have cited all along that the Cygnet is down to emissions legislation (I think). But I can't help thinking they'd have been better off licensing a hybrid powertrain to address this. Or perhaps toughing it out and waiting for the EU to give concessions to low volume car makers (as I'm pretty sure will ultimately happen).
Link up with Toyota by all means, but do so to leverage their technology, not their shopping trolleys! I cannot believe Toyota would stipulate taking an iQ and slapping it round the face as part of any technology usage deal!
At the mooted price I can only see this ever being a novelty item for pampered women and deb's popping out to Harrods. Don't really see there being a danger of the roads becoming congested with them. So I don't see this is as a kamikaze marketing manoeuvre, but equally cannot imagine the business model underlying the project - it's not going to be a money spinner.

Interesting angle.... If there is to be a technology link up of some sort down the road it could very well be that someone has taken a calcualted risk that Toyota will gain more from this little exercise than AML might stand to lose to the greater good of both parties in the long term....There's a lot of talk on this and other threads about damage to the marque caused by the Cygnet. The real question is therefore "how many people would let the existence of the Cygnet in the AM range put them off buying one of the 'proper' AMs?" I know I wouldn't, whatever the company's reasons for producing the thing!
