Having read the thread about people trying to hack into softwear on the existing ' not fit for purpose ' sat nav surely the easier route is to replace the hideous carbuncle that appears so elegantly from the dash with a Tom Tom ? As I am as capable in technical matters as a politician is honest I can only appeal to those of a technical bent to comment - has it been done - if not why not ?

It has been!
Take one portable TomTom (on the phone in my case)
One window sucker type phone/ satnav holder
Pop up the Aston's Satnav screen
Sucker holder to Aston screen
Switch on TomTom
Job done! smile

Or is that not quiet what you meant? wink

...is there way of remembering to take the said Tom Tom off the pop up screen before switching the car off (so that the screen doesnt try to close with said Tom Tom attached)?

If there is it seems like a sensible upgrade to me smile

NO!
Really need a way of the Aston screen staying up when car switched off for it to work really well. OK on local trips, but then tend to know where I am so dont need Satnav, but makes life interesting on long trip- driving down to Spain as an example as you have to remember to unclip at petrol stations. As its a sucker mounting not too bad though.
Got used to it but not 100% ideal, but as my TomTom is on the smartphone, its a good place for mounting as can use the phone as well (yes I do use the bloottooth for hand free).

Do a search. No one's replaced it in the housing to my knowledge. Too much faffing about.

The later disks help, leaving it just a couple of generations out of date!

Is the MY09 Satnav considered better than the prior versions? I haven't used mine that much yet, but it seems at least decent rather than the object of great derision as indicated on this forum.

I believe they're all just as bad as one another. Though as the revised disks are dated Jan 09 you would hope that cars made after this date would at least get those installed.

I think the latest cars have a hard disk based system too. Though I believe the software's the same (ie carp).

I have the hard drive version told it is quicker to load but no 6 digit postcode so have to enter the name of the street etc. No DVD in it (unless I have been done)when upgrading you buy the upgrade DVD but then have to leave in the unit or else it reverts back to the original version.

Do not use it that much as no speed cameras on database (not that I speed but handy), but if someone had an updated DVD with them on I would use more.

Quite amazing how £2Ks worth of gubbins is trounced in every respect by a £99 TomTom from Halfords isn't it.

It's the same in my Jaguar - a lumbering, ponderous disk-based system that is not upgradable, won't take postcodes, and can only be set when stationary. It is good, however, as a scrolling map (albeit out of date) which gives better orientation and scale than a TomTom.

This is the same Jaguar which has a digital bus which prevents any aftermarket hi-fi, but does have a cassette player banghead

In short, where car makers can't keep up with the world outside, they should leave a space for a TomTom or similar and leave it at that.

What amazes me more about this issue is the fact that Aston do not listen to their customers and plow on regardless. The new DBS, what an awesome car and what do they plonk in it? A VOLVO sat nav system that has been derided for years. I don't know whether to laugh or cry to be honest. Pathetic.

I am loolking at literally ripping the whole thing out and custom fitting a nice Pioneer or Alpine system from scratch. I will then make a Youtube vid of me burning the old system next to my car. Hopefully that will go Viral and the assholes at Aston will then have something to choke on in their boardroom won't they smile

There will be a reason, you just have to figure out what it is.

They may have bought a warehouse-full of them to get a good price, or they may be locked into some kind of contract, or maybe the MDs son wanted a job at Volvo and strings were pulled...

firstly I must agree the the sat nav is absolutely pants, at the time it was integrated Aston Ford Mazda did not have a decent system this was the best in the group, the issue with replacement is not as simple as it seems, it has integrated into varies systems the wiring button control etc etc all are for this, i could easily rip out the screen have a purpose built pod for such as tomtom, but this would not work with the existing controls, The denison 5000 unit such as used for ipod connection and handsfree would allow for various other inputs, cameras, dvd input, hard drive usb stick, kenwood, Alpine and Pioneer satnav systems The cost of development would be immense because of the factor of integration, as an aftermarket upgrade again the cost in comparison to an £100 tomtom is not realistic, i have spent many hours looking at the options the cheapest being a designed pod for the tomtom removing the existing screen, still not ideal as the distance to operate the touchscreen etc, when i do come up with a viable alternative under £1000.00 fitted with bluetooth, ipod, usb, video input,as well as a fully updateble sat nav system with traffic i will gladly market it,

The search continues

Have an MY09 AMV8 with sat nav and several tomtoms (bike, day car and iphone). The tomtom is clearly the leader in the market is likely to stay that way. That said, have used my Aston sat nav on quite a few occasions and although the interface is a bit pants, it works just fine. I dont have any complaints to date.

On my MY10 V12 Vantage there is the most recent DVD based system and I find it rather good.

Well you muyst be easily pleased.

Have you seen a TomTom? (I'm not even going to mention the latest BMW navigation system - it's fantastic).

A few people seem to have less derisory things to say about the MY09 hard-drive based system. Maybe it's a significant improvement over the earlier system and not so bad (though obviously not state-of-the-art either)?

Sounds like we are stuck .Has anybody ever taken this up with Aston - all they have to do is read any forum to know they have a problem ? Any body from Aston there and care to comment ?

I have a touch screen sat nav in my 2003 Lexus which is fantastic - since Aston now have Mr Toyota as their new best pal I would like to suggest they give up f....ing the brand with pug ugly bd children and get some Toyota technology into their swans
