TomTom replacement Sat Nav

Having read the thread about people trying to hack into softwear on the existing ' not fit for purpose ' sat nav surely the easier route is to replace the hideous carbuncle that appears so elegantly from the dash with a Tom Tom ? As I am as capable in technical matters as a politician is honest I can only appeal to those of a technical bent to comment - has it been done - if not why not ?
