What should the brake pads look like on a DB9?

Starting at the disk, my front nearside looks like it has 1mm of light/tan material, then 5mm of material followed by 5mm metal backing. The front offside pad looks the same except that the light coloured material is almost completely gone.

There are no warning lights.

Yesterday (after dark) I had some very strange noise coming from the front offside wheel. It sounded like I was dragging a thick pane of glass along the ground.

I could not see anything, despite spending a good 20 minutes looking. The sound dissappeared after a few miles, but I drove home cautiously. The brakes seemed to be working perfectly, and applying the brakes did not seem to affect the noise directly.

Thanks

hi the Aston Martin genuine pads do have warning sensors where as the after market pads such as ebc do not, it sounds like you have gone metal to metal and may now need to replace the discs as well as the pads, if you have not had any warnings i suspect you have non genuine pads fitted, get them checked as soon as possible,

Thanks Rick. I was really hoping to go for a drive today.[sigh]

The car has only done 16000 miles and has only been serviced by the official dealer. I will be very unimpressed if these are not the correct pads.

Here is a photo. Is it possible to tell if the pads are worn?

Thanks,

if that is the worst pad they are still ok, the backs usually last 20000 miles whilst the fronts 30000, From what i can see you have a lot of dust build up, they may require just a clean, and the noise may be something you have picked up whilst driving, have you been down a freshly tarmaced road, it is possible the pads have been sticking so the inner pads may have worn down prematurely these do not have the sensor fitted, also from the picture it looks like they have been quite hot have you be driving aggressively wink, my advice just get them checked, safety first.

Ahhh, thank you very much Rick. As it happens, I am having them checked on Tuesday prior to a trackday on Wednesday.

I have had pads wear out on another car, and the noise was very different.
I guess that I will never know what caused it.

I think that the "dusty" appearance is something to do with the flash going off inside the confined space of the wheel. They look clean to the naked eye. Once again, thank you.
