It's my first post on here. Although I have been lurking for the past 2 months since buying my V8V (which is fantastic), I am sad to say my first post is a bit of an unfortunate one...

Unfortunately I was burgled when i was at work late last week. In addition to stealing all the usual household stuff (jewellery, electricals etc) they also stole all of the keys to my V8V. The thieves didn't steal the car immediately but came back for it later on that evening.. Fortunately I managed to disturb them and they were unable to get away with the car. Aston came later that evening and picked it up (as i had no keys I couldnt drive it to a safe hiding space).

I am just wondering how long it should take to get new locks fitted, and more importantly how much will it cost? I think my insurance only covers changing the locks to a cost of £100 (which is considerably less than the cost of the trailer to take the car away ...)

thanks in advance

bummer

pretty common if the keys go wandering that the car will go too - a friend had work done to his house and the spare keys to his two week old Golf went walking...

are you claiming off the car or house insurance?

Looks like we will try and claim on house insurance.. Given the £100 limit on keys (apparently) on the car insurance plus the monstrous voluntary excess that i agreed to, i suspect that the home insurance route would be most economic

Don't bet on it. My daughter lost the house keys a while back and I had to have the locks changed. It worked out, by the time they took off the excess, that they were going to pay me less than they were going to raise the premium on the house contents for the current year alone. And this is a mainstream insurer - Green Army !

Basically we're none of us insured unless someone breaks in and takes everything. And even then they'll probably claim that you are under-insured and so won't pay you out.

I guess in your case you already have a substantial claim for the rest of gear that was stolen so that may make it more sense to go that route. Sympathy by the way on the burglary - ironic that you're out there working late to earn a crust and meanwhile they're back at your place plying their less than honest trade. Hope you get it sorted.

Thanks GR1FF1F i think you are right: not sure what i am insured for! - it looks like home insurance won't cough up and keys are not covered by the car insurance....

Rick - this may be one for you - how much do you think it will cost to get the locks and keys replaced? Its an 06 so a real key...

many thanks in advance

The issue is going to be the steering lock, easiest would to be order a key to chassis number this will allow the vehicle steering lock to operate otherwise drilling of the barrel would be required to allow removal, the lock set is £178.08+ vat then two remotes £203.00+vat labour time to replace locks is about 3.5 hours and then you have the programming, of the keys,

I had the keys to my V8 stolen too, Stratstone charged me around 800 pounds for barrel replacements etc. Took four days. I also could not claim on insurance as car insurance said house and house insurance said car.... buggers

i hope you took it to the ombudsman, as one should pay (as long as you are covered for keys). It costs you nothing, and both parties have to abide by what they say.

Can they not just re-code the system so the stolen keys won't start the car? This is what we do when a Mercedes customer loses a key. You can then just order a set of original keys....I guess the only issue with this is that they can still access the car with the key in the door (although anyone could do this by breaking a window), but I'm sure as soon as they realise it won't start they aren't going to be bothered with it.

yes you can do this, recode new keys and fobs and delete the originals from the vehicle, issue is as you state thieves would have access to the interior of the vehicle, so vehicle steering lock can be disengaged so the vehicle although not driven could be loaded say onto a truck, if the vehicle was later recovered with no lock damage etc, i wonder how an insurance company would view this,,

Sorry to hear about your keys being stolen, lucky you disturbed them! a friend of mine was not so lucky and they took his 360SC and Gallardo, the Gallardo was found on harrow high street with a burnt out clutch and the 360SC was found in Dubai a year after it was stolen, the only thing that stopped the tracker working was the container the car had been kept in!

Hope you get your locks sorted and the car back on the road soon.

I'd be tempted to do nothing, leave the car on the drive and set up a 'sting' for the theiving $$%^& when they stupidly return to try to be off with it.

Bit of a gamble though, must admit, and no doubt that if you were to catch the criminals at it YOU'D be the criminal and be done for entrapment or something similar!
