Well ive been back in the UK a tad over a month now and have been knicked for speeding (taxing) twice already! Once in Peterborough by a camera that I know where it is and always slow down (54 in a 40) apparently and now on my trip to John O groats this weekend just gone.

Drove up to Inverness and stayed overnight and then drove up to John O groats in the morning. On the way down and because I had seen a Saftey tax van on the way up and because the A9 is ludicrously a 60 limit I was taking it easy. Sadly I did not have my Eyes GLUED to the speedo (im going to get you knicked device) and on a very nice open downhill stretch my speed nudged up while I was appreciating the sun, the road ahead and the gorgeous scenary. Next thing I am being pulled over by two very nice plod who had been hiding and had taken a reading from the rear of my car as I went past. He actually said that he was suprised I wasnt going faster! Anyway 87 in a 60 (apparently) and he sent the details to some chap called the procurator fiscal who no doubt will see on said details

A: English
B: Aston Martin
C: 87 in a 60

and come to the the conclusion that he must tax me the earth and give me 3 points just to teach me what a bad man I am!

Net result is that I have realised how much of a pain in the arse and paranoid experience driving in the uk has become and I will never visit Scotland again as long as I draw breath in my lungs.

Hate to tell you but 87mph in a 60 is probably 5points and 2-300 pounds worth of fine, i speak from experance after getting done for 86mph in a 60 zone at 630 am on the sutra last year, best of luck.

Where have you been where you dont get done. I have lived in US, Australia and Switzerland and have been done many more times there than in the UK. Infact I have been done many more times abroad than in the UK. Sorry to hear your bad luck..!

Hold your breath, Mark, as soon as you crack 85 it goes from 3 and £60 to whatever they like. I got 4 points and £650 for 86 in a 60 - Wiltshire. Based on what you're driving they have complete freedom to be vindictive.

Mark, re NZ, I got done twice there back in October (received notifications via post on my return) but I'd still rather be there....now if the exchange rate could only sort itself out rolleyes

Nuff said....we said it all at the meet but you could say (understatement) that we are likeminded

Exactly Griff. What got my goat was the attitude of the Police. They know it's a tourist road and they know it's a mile long downhill open stretch that is perfectly safe and they hide away. That is what I hate about this place.

I was in Germany where Mostly you can do what speed you like on the autobahns and in bavaria I NEVER saw a mobile Police camera ever! Very civilised and a MUCH more free society to be honest than the UK where you are monitored on your every move and then pilloried for the slightest infraction of the communist ideal.

Mark.

PS

You are so right Steve.

Agree with sadlerj. Lived in Oz (Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney) from 1979-2001 and got done LOADS of times despite being 'really careful'. Three times I was left with 3 points on my licence for 18 months and had to drive like a nun until some points came off!. Never been done in the UK as its so easy (by comparison) to avoid.

Hi Mark, bet you wished you stayed under the water, not too many speed traps there. At least a couple of weeks ago was fairly sedate or you could have been in for more pain. Shall I still put you down for the next meet or is that place in jeopardy?

Good luck matey

To echo some others: I got done for 52 in a 30mph zone and got 6 points and a 75 quid fine...despite having loads of plausible mitigation too!

I was under the impression laser jammers are illegal over here.
However.....if you get the Laser pro park this doubles up as a front parking aid and to date i havent scratched my front bumper..........

Laser are everywhere at the moment, currently got 6 points for the below
I got my 1st 3 points when going to work at 4.50 in the morning doing 62 in a 30 however on a mainish road.
Luckly he gave me 3 points as he said the road shouldnt be a 30.
After this i got the "front parking aid" installed and this alerted me 3 times to possible stops.
Next 3 was in central London where i was coming under a tunnel which was a 30 and got caught doing 57, slightly under luckly.
The siren in my car was going off however i was on hands free so didnt relise and then it was all to late.
Luckly my 2 year 6 point rule ran out 3 days prior so could of been a extra V8 for sale on the adds section.

I do agree with points for speeding however i think there are times they should understand.
Before 5 in the morning on the A316 in Richmond doing double he should of given me a talking to however both times were traffic police so no chance of them letting us off!

(Assuming you're not joking...) I'm no saint myself (very far from it), but this kind of encapsulates why the anti-speed brigade will always have an argument.

You were speeding, and distracted enough whilst doing so that you didn't hear the alert to tell you there was a camera rolleyes

Whether hands free or not, talking on a phone whilst driving is distracting. If we are ever to get a common sense attitude towards speed, we have to prove that higher speeds can be used safely and that we are responsible enough to do so wink If a call is so important it must be made there and then, either pull over or slow down sufficiently that you can concentrate on protecting other road users.

Sadly i have to agree with you - friend of mine picked me up at Heathrow to get us to Birmingham and i NEVER saw as that much speeding cams - he used a thing called roadangel to see them - i was a bit shocked - has Orwell become reality ? No critic or offence to your country but it was shocking for an alien like myself.... confused

it's the hiding behind trees i can't stand. cameras - fine - we can slow down on the roads we know well, or use Road angel on the ones we're unfamiliar with (or TomTom, given that the Volvo Satnav on the V8 is about as legible as the mappa mundi). but when you've got a couple of boys in blue hiding behind a bush - and you, quite rightly as a driver, are concentrating on the road ahead rather than scanning the sides for potential coppers - there's no chance. moan moan. very different in italy. i lived there for a while and when stopped on m-way in calabria a considerable way over the limit, they just wanted to have a chat and tell me how much they liked my (then fairly unremarkable) car!

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. I was just wondering how many people did you kill as a result of your speeding?.... Oh none so in other words speeding doesn't kill? Hhhm who would have guessed.

Oh by the way it may be worth a quick phone call to Nick Freeman (Mr Loophole) or one of his associates, he might be able to get you off.

I'm not sure socialism has much to do with it - I drive a fast car and do so quickly from time to time. Sometimes I get caught doing so. I get fined. It annoys me, but I get over it. Sometimes I rant about things on the internet taht annoy me, I also get over this - but unfortunately it's still on the internet when I have calmed down. Just a thought.

I take your point but I disagree. Im also not ranting. However, socialismn just like its cousin communismn is only one small step from dictatorship and seeks to control every aspect of a citizens life by the state. Hmm sounds like the UK yes smile
