i`m sure others have this annoyance but has anyone sorted that horrible rusty looking base of the discs(behind the alloy surrounding the nuts)? i don`t want to just slap some paint on as i`m sure it would invariably just come right off.not really important i know but as i have decided to keep the car for a while longer i intend to get a detail and attend to little cosmetic matters such as this.

Hi,

I second ur thoughts completely! My front right hub and rear right hubs are terribly corroded also!! I looked into getting a fix and was told some well appplied heat resistant paint would fix the problem. Not brilliant but anything has to be better than looking at rusty wheel hubs after I've just spent an hour meticulously detailing the car!!!

Any ideas???

well I know people who use Hammerite on their car disc hubs....usually the low mileage owner who will go through a set of disks every 7-10 years

if you drive a lot, then a set per year is more like it, so you have a few months at the start when they are new looking, then they get worse then you replace them smile

but really, do you know any cars that have iron brake discs that dont rust? wink

..best option is to go for ally belled discs, i dont know anyone who makes these yet for the Vantage, but then of course the centre of the disc itself will *still * rust ...either that or spend £10K on carbon set-up

I had mine painted about 18 months ago by the dealer. They still get dirty but no more rust.

hammerite it is then!! if i had a spare 10k for carbon discs i would be slapping a deposit down right now on a db9 sportpack.as is this is the longest i have owned any car and it just doesn`t make sense to drop 40k in 2 years AGAIN!! christ, when i think of how much i have lost on cars in the last 10 years it makes me weep.

LOL ..me too....I reckon I could have retired by now, if I didnt have a car habit smile

I could do my own if I could be arsed, Ive got some grey smoothrite that matches my wheels - it really is just a case of jack the car up, wheel off, sand lightly, paint the brake hub, wheel on, then do the next wheel - defo no more than 30 mins per corner (I did my old Elise....once)

...but i just live with it...its a daily driver, its got stone chips, a tiny dent, a small chip in a wheel, the side bolster on a seat is wearing, the carpets isnt pefect anymore, the disc hubs are rusty etc....and Ive driven it 40K miles of fun and love going everywhere in it, so I dont care ! ...its car, built to be driven smile

40k miles!! top man, i feel like a bit of a veteran having done 25k.other than for kudos factor i cannot come up with a good reason to chop it in, and that ain`t worth another fortune! i think i`ll have a go myself at those wheels.couple that with a nice detailing and carpet shampooing/leather treatment- that should scratch my sportpack itch for another year or so

Hi Dr Pain,

I had my wheels hubs re-painted at the dealers at 26k miles, along with some other work such as new centre wheel covers as they had corroded, new chrome tail pipes and wiper arms because of rust. The dealer didn't charge for any of the work so I assume it was all under warranty.

I have found that most things can be rectified under warranty, as long as you maintain a good relationship with the service manager.

I would go and see your local dealer and get the work done under warranty, after all, we are talking rust here aren't we?

Good luck buddy.

Funny thing is that my dealer automatically sprays the bells and exposed parts of the discs whenever my TVR goes in for service, no charge just part of the service. I only noticed it after a few years when he said "Yeah, we always do that." It's no big deal, just get am aerosol and spray them silver or black. I did the Aston's discs a cople of weekends ago as part of a clean up when I was doing the wheels and wheel arches.

im sure wheel hubs are covered under warranty

although im pretty sure brake disc hubs are not as they are a wear item

it sure would be nice if Aston Martin dealers sprayed them at service time smile

I have watched this thread with interest, and it is very easy to implement at the time of a service, or pad replacement, templates are being made as I type to mask calipers etc, out of curiosity is there other things you would like to see included as part of the yearly service,

Rick, does the ECU get re-flashed as part of the yearly service? I've heard this can have a positive effect and is noticable afterwards.

rick..don`t laugh, hear me out.all these detailers offer some sort of "winter top up" for something nominal like 100-150 quid where they don`t extensively treat the car but more like just give it a quick once over with the machine polisher and add some wax.i`m sure a company like yours doing x number of services every week could contract one of these guys in your area to do a certain number of cars for you on a regular basis for a tidy price.you then slap that cost plus a cherry on top for yourself and everyone is a winner!!every time someone gets their car back after a service looking like new you will definately have an edge over the dealers!

Hi amd you are correct, just like windows on your pc there are patches and improvements, this is not just for the engine ecu but nearly all of the modules fitted to the car, on many where we want reprogram the powerfold mirrors to autoclose on locking the car, invariably we have to reflash both door modules before we can activate this feature, so not only can it add functionality it can make the driving experience much improved, that is also why when we remap cars we can improve throttle response etc etc,

tuscaneer we already include a wash and wax, tyreshine hoover and air freshening which is included in the service and many other repairs, A proper polish would be great but with time constraints, a lot of people only come up for the day and have long drives so the sooner we can get the car done they can be on there way home, don't forget an average service is already over 4 hours without the cleaning and any other repairs or upgrades, also pricing if we had to increase our pricing then the visit to the midlands may not be as cost effective, irrespective of our skill, price is also a major factor, This could be an additional addon if requested and would add £100.00 for basically a full valet,

the brake disc refurb is now included,

I offer this service to my XK customers....I charge them for the initial clean up and paint (discs can get pretty crappy as we all know) and after that every time they come back for the service it is redone for free.

Rick, here's an idea.

Dropping your car off for a service is normally a chore, unless it is collected there is the courtesy car, ask someone to pick you up from the dealer etc, etc. As you said before, people are prepared to travel to you due to your value for money and excellent service, but what to they do whilst waiting 4 hours for their car?

How about DMS cutting a deal with a local hotel for overnight stay, dinner and breakfast and spa. Customers can check in to the hotel, hand over their car keys, (you collect the car and return by noon the next next day) when they check out, the car is waiting for them all serviced and valeted. The cost could be offered as an option to your normal charge and as long as the total cost is less than a main dealers service only cost, you have created value for money.

Just an idea.
