Help and advice on DB9 purchase
Discussion
Why is life never simple, just when you think you have it all worked out there is always something that comes along and delivers a slap. Have spent the past few months looking for a new car(DB9). Couple of weeks ago I eventually stuck down a deposit on a lovely black 07 model. Was not quite what i wanted as it did not have a sport pack but all other boxes ticked.
Spent the next couple of days arranging all the financial side of things, still though with a niggle in the back of my head about the car as i was really stuck on the sports pack option. Then one evening up pops a DB9 2008 58 facelift model with everything I wanted for an amazing price. First thought was this was to good to be true but decided to call the dealer selling it the next morning.
Call went through and car was advertised at the right price, sales guy tells me that the reason it was cheap was due to it having had an accident. The accident it seems involved a forklift rolling into the driver door side. Oh dear me thinks. He then wnet on to explain that it had been professionally repaired, was still totally HPI clear etc etc, in fact he even had pictures of the damage done and the repair taking place which he sent me and you can see in the below the damage that was done.
That was fine then, not extensive damage and repair all very good, price the car was being offered at made it a very very attractive buy, could not really understand why he was telling me about it at all to honest as it was not registered Cat D or insurance claim of any kind. Still, nice to find an honest dealer that is straight with you and prices accordingly.
So my next step is then to pull out of the deal for the other car (settled amicable and and forfeited some of my deposit). Spent the next week or so sorting out the cash side etc. So all good then. Then today when I am about to pay the money he drops the bombshell, seems the work was carried out by a non approved garage and AM have invalidated the warranty on the car, he proceeds to tell that the owner argued with them over this but he gave in but he thinks there may still be a case to be had.
As you can imagine this knocked me for six and my initial response has been to walk away. Have though spent the evening mulling this over and thought i would ask the PHers what they would do, also have a question. AM will hand out warranties on the DB9 providing they pass they 120 point check that they undertake. In this instance do you think it would be possible to have them carry this out on the car and pay the money for the Warranty. The cost of this would still be no where near the cost of buying another car of this age and mileage.

What is the difference in price between the repaired car (after AM approves it for warranty) and a car without such a complex history?.
I am thinking I would want at least a 10% difference and assurances that the car's history (damage AND the retro activated AM warranty)couldn't come back to haunt me come re-sale time.

I would check what part of the warranty AM are stating they will invalidate.
I Don't think any manufacturer would invalidate the warranty for say, the engine, because the door had been painted by someone other than an AM authorised body shop.
If it's just the paint warranty for those panels that have been repaired (By the sound of it, just the drivers door), then I wouldn't be overly concerned.
I would be interested to see what happened if the engine failed during the warranty period and AM said no due to an issue with who did the paintwork. If it went to court, any judge would surely have a field day

Would cost around 2,500 for the 2 years extended and this would leave about 10% between this car and the next nearest in price. No record of the damage history and not sure if the warranty would show up as extended when I get around to selling, but to honest I would feel a bit guilty not letting the next buyer know the full history of the car.I am thinking I would want at least a 10% difference and assurances that the car's history (damage AND the retro activated AM warranty)couldn't come back to haunt me come re-sale time.

Don't know about that... Porsche will happily invalidate their whole warranty if you, say, replace the battery with the 'wrong' kind of battery, or paint the wheels......bigandclever said:

Don't know about that... Porsche will happily invalidate their whole warranty if you, say, replace the battery with the 'wrong' kind of battery, or paint the wheels......Owner takes car to dealer 'Hi, I think my engine has failed'
Dealer 'No problem Sir, we'll take a look for you'
Owner 'Thanks, keep me up to date'
Dealer 'Hi Sir, you're right, your engine has failed, and requires a new unit. But we've contacted Porsche GB, who say they won't pay because you have painted your wheels blue'
Lawyer to Porsche GB 'Dear Sirs, please prove beyond all reasonable doubt, that my clients engine failed as a result of the colour of the paint on his wheels'
Porsche GB 'Err, well, Urm, we can't'
Just can't see it myself, it wouldn't be in any manufacturer's intrest, or worth all the bad publicity to do it.
I could understand it if the guy was topping up his own oil with the wrong grade, or as in the case of MB, invalidating the warranty on the fuel system after a misfuel, but wheel colour, no.
As I said before, a judge would have a field day with it

And this may be harsh on who's ever selling, but they're taking the p***.
So good advice on here - walk away. They're beautiful cars, you're spending a lot of your hard-earned cash. Find the one that makes you happy, then get the best deal you can on it.
Good luck and once you've found one worthy, we look forward to hearing about your fabulous new toy.

Have to agree with the majority on this.
Leave it.
It also looks like a lot more than the door's damaged from here. Rear panel, sill, possibly floor section?
I work with forklifts and know the damage they can cause.
Remember a little one ton forklift can weigh in excess of two and a half tons.
