I am looking at returning to a DB9 Volante 2009 model but am just checking the competition.
I have had a 996 Carrera 4 Cab which I enjoyed but the current range does not get me excited. There is a load of very useful comparisons on this site between the Aston and the Porsche but I have not seen any mention of the Merc SL600.
Can anyone confirm from experience that my excluding this car from consideration is not a mistake.
Also does anyone have any info of when the '9' is to be replaced?

IMO the SL600 is rather a barge, having said that its a friggen fast barge I don't think any Aston would see which way it went in a straight line! But its a ballistic cruiser with a touch of sports car, amazing value used but just doesn't have the class, sound, involvement or "special feel" of the Aston. The DB9 Volante is a tad too wobbly for my tastes, although I believe they have improved the 09MY, so I'd go nearly new if I was buying one! Great GT, love the V12...but the 4.7 Roadster is still the chop pick if you want a real sports car alla 911, but then I would say that because I chose that over the others ......

I can comment on my experience with a pair of SL's although not on the V12 performance as I had two smaller engined models. The first one I gave back after a year (with a full refund) after 17 attempts to fix the leaking boot and the second one went west, also because of a leaking boot. Both cars were meant to have their 'latest' seals but all repair attempts failed. That being said, Merc the company were fabulous and nothing was too much trouble in terms of loan cars, drop off and delivery, this you could not fault. Sorry if this is negative, but just my experience. This Sat I hope to be the proud owner of an 07MY V8V.
imho these are two very different concepts one sells on looks, noise, image and exclusivity the other on power, efficiency and heritage. One is a top of the range modern house the other a proper Georgian mansion - you'll either get the Aston or you won't - it is not as sophisticated a car as your porsche or the Merc - but it presses my buttons !.
On after sales I have to say even though Merc have apparantly raised their game the service experience I have had is still poor compared with Aston or Lexus.

If it helps.....I have just changed my SL55 AMG for a DB9........the SL55 was a great car....very quick....great noise under full throttle,,,,reliable ect ect....but let me ask you a question, next time you see an old school pal whom you havn't seen for years and he asks you the typical male question "so what you driving these days" what would be your prefered answer be ?
I know its shallow but who cares...its part of the pleasure of owning an Aston Martin

Just changing my CL55 AMG for an Aston DB9 and pick her up next week. When testing the Aston it could not come close to the AMG in terms of power, comfort and equipment and I will miss the CL55 so much......but come on, its an Aston DB9, it looks amazing, it sounds incredible, no ones ignores it when it passes, its a legend of a car and is almost every kids dream motor and finally its going to be mine.
