First time poster in the AM section here!

Ever since I was young and learning to drive, I had promised myself a "911" of some form before I turned 30. Well, with only a few weeks to go I find myself fortunate enough to be able to get one (and be able to run one!)
After a not-so-good experience with my local OPC recently, it has put me off the marque somewhat. Then, when thinking about what else I could look at, realised that a V8V was well within range and the bug appears to have snow balled from there! I must get myself into a Vantage...

So, the questions start...
I've read the buying guide in Evo from a month or two ago and there doesn't seem to be any major pitfalls or problems other than some niggles on the early cars?
If I'm being realistic I'm looking at used 55/06 plate cars around the £45-50k bracket. This seems to get me a good 15k-20k mile 4.3 version. Does this sound correct?
Is there anything to be aware of on cars this age? Any work that should have been done etc?
Do AM offer an extended warranty on the cars? If so, what are the costs and is it worth taking? Are they a huge risk with no warranty?
I would have a pre-purchase inspection carried out on anything I am serious about buying too.
Are there any colour/interior combinations that are real no-no's? I'm currently leaning toward Mercury silver or Black with Sandstone upper and seats with black carpet and headlining.

Thanks smile

Your actually in a pretty much identical position to myself, albeit I have already purchased mine, pick her up Friday. I traded in my 911 C4S for an 06 V8V 14k on the clock, serviced today by the dealer at Broughtons AM and spoke with Aston directly for an official warranty which they agreed to do for £1099 and waived the £399 inspection fee as they were already doing the service (dealer paid)

I paid just under £50k for mine with a good trade in on my existing 911 and some nice extras thrown in from the dealer, 12 months tax, all scratches scuffs removed in bodyshop, windscreen chip fixed up etc.

My advice to you is to get the latest model you can for your budget, mine was 40-50k and I was £150 short of this - there were a lot more around the £50k - 60k mark but I wanted to stick to my budget.

I went for what I consider to be my personal favorite, Meteorite exterior with black interior, this shouldn't be too difficult to sell on at a later date.

As far as things that go wrong in my many searches there doesn't seem to be anything obvious like the Porsche RMS, I haven't heard many horror stories of engines giving out after 20k, transmission failures etc, in fact the majority of things I have seen have been small things like tyre pressure guages, door locks all the sort of things an official AM warranty should cover.

Get an official warranty and you should be fine smile

Thanks Ghecko.

Did you find AM dealers open to movement on the prices much? I'm new to this market so am not too sure on what to expect.

Thanks to Pugsey, I've had a good read of the warranty thread and it seems that there are only minor faults that seem to be common. Obviously having at least 12 months of warranty will be nice in case I suffer from some of these. From there I can just play it by ear.

Quite like the look of this one http://pistonheads.com/sales/1111438.htm

I'd be slightly wary of the light interior because of reflection on the windscreen... like when you put a newspaper on the dashboard. That said, mine is black so I don't know, it was just something someone else mentioned a while ago. Best of luck, it's a lovely car.

Nice to see prices are stabilising, could have bought this car back in September and October for similar money and had 10 months of depreciation less motoring in an Aston...ohh isn't hindsight a wonderful thing!

Good luck with your search...they are truly wonderful cars...but make sure you don’t get a 'Friday' car. Most that age would have had the niggles sorted. Personally I would look at a private car with a low number of owners, then really get a good look at the owner and "interview" them, it seems what is really important is how the car is treated. You want one that gets out a bit and has some decent runs (not in the city), is "used" but not "abused" if you know what I mean.

Long term prices were something I was curious on too. For various reasons any car I buy will be part financed so buying privately isn't an option. 'Balloon' values I've been quoted so far seem to be in the £16k-£20k region and I'd hope not to see a loss/cost of anywhere near that much in 3-4 years of ownership.
I'd agree on hoping most older cars would have had the niggles sorted. At least I have a list of them now (from the warranty thread) to check on any potential purchase. A car with an AM warranty would just add peace of mind to this though.

I'd buy the newest you can afford, with a bit of luck you should be able to get an 07MY car with the newer seats (these do lift the interior)for the top end of your budget, in early 06 there were also a few other changes like white digital display, door LED's etc.
Most important thing is condition of course closely followed by best colour combinations with best re-sale being on Silver/Grey exterior Meteorite, Tungsten, Titanium etc(closely followed by Black) with light grey taylors headlining & black interior (or blue) the darker shades are vastly more popular & some "vibrant" colour options while appealing to some limit best re-sale potential!
The next thing is choosing one with a full spec, as everyone wants the toys on their Aston biggrin best of luck hope this helps

Thanks Grant.

Is there anywhere which lists the variations between the MY's? Some sort of comparison table?

as Grant mentioned try to get a 07 model - you should get a decent one for your money and the 4.3l sounds much better than the newer 4.7l cool

The difference in the 07 are:

Revised better seats
LEDs in the door handles
Buttons on the seat to make them drop forward
A few other small interior revisions
Most of the small niggles are also ironed out

Here is a prime example of a good 07 car :P

Thanks for the suggestion wink Not a fan on blue interiors though frown

So it sounds like an 07 4.3l is the best buy for my budget?

I think you will be lucky to find one with low mileage below 50K to be honest

I'm in the same situation. My top end is £50k but really want an 07MY, so after seeing 3 or 4 06/06 within the last couple of months (not buying due to various reasons) am going to go over the £50k to look at an 07MY this Saturday. It has 2 owners, but less than 4K on the clock, not used much, anyone with comments regarding a 2 year old car with these low miles?
Cheers all......

i don`t think the mileage is particularly important.in fact i think i would be more wary of a garage queen that is nearly 3 years old and only done 4000 miles.i`ve had mine since new(2007) and can honestly say the car didn`t even bed in for the first 10-12000 miles.i`ve now done 24000 miles and the car feels faster and more planted than ever.i have mollie coddled my car from new, never over-revved from cold and generally driven it sympathetically.impeccable service record etc. if i was in the market for a used aston now i would be far more interested in the guy selling it than the numbers on the clock.
