Stinky aircon

I've noticed that when I start the car the aircon emits a pretty nasty pong, a bit like tramp's socks or maybe a dead rat. Most unpleasant. Tends to go after a minute or two.

Any suggestions??

How old is it?

And have you had the filters cleaned/system flushed?

Bad smells in the aircon is usually caused by bacteria. You can buy special air con sprays that kill off moulds and bacterias making the car smell nice again

Thanks Murph, Rick. It's Dec 07 and has only had one service (by Murray's in Edinburgh). I doubt if they would do much with the filters on the first service? I'll have a look at the stuff you recommend, Rick, and will let you know if it makes a difference.

Newer than mine and mine doesn't smell.

Do you keep the car anywhere damp?

As Rick said, sounds like a build up of nasties in it. Bacterial sprays etc should sort.
