Well I've convinced my wife to that we should keep the Vantage and get a big family cruiser. So far the Jag Xf diesel has my interest - I preferred it to the BMW 530d.

The best price I can find is around 28,500. How little do I offer without being too cheeky?

Sorry about posting in this forum, but technically there is a mention of an Aston, and all you folks are friendly and helpful!!!

Sorry Stan my man, but much as I know they are popular I just can't bring myself to actively help anyone buy a D car, may have something to do with driving a host of noisy, smelly diesels as company cars in my younger days.

Much as they have improved the horrific clattering noise, carcinogenic spores, vast smoke output, horrible smells, fuel that gets in your shoes, lack of exhaust/induction note, inability to rev & did I mention.... carcinogenic spores wink mean despite the great torque & fabulous mpg............ I HATE DIESEL cars biggrin

Mark my word when we get over the C02 emissions spotlight thing they will be the next asbestos!

Now about that fab petrol XF.... biggrin

Do you do enough miles to make a dieel worhtwhile? I certainly don't, so my daily charger is a rather thirsty petrol saloon (thirstier than the DB9).

Grange gave me the xf as courtesy car. It was so much more comfy, refined and relaxing than my civic type-r.....

Dammit.... I'm starting to sound like my old man smile

Unfortunately, I can't fit 3 in the vantage. My wife is not convinced that the family db9 is the answer.

Can you wait until 2011 and buy the BMW M5 turbo v8; that looks an ideal family car.

You tried the 535d..? I don't really see what there is to hate about one of those...as family motoring...the XF was too small in the back amd I still cannot get the 'old man' image out of my head. We had a M5 for a while as a family car and I just fond it a but daft..and the lack of torque got on my nerves (I know you need to nail it like in the vantage but when you are trying to make swift progress without the wife noticing then a screaming V10 just is not the ticket). After a long and hard decision making time we settled on the 335d Touring for family motoring (the 5 is just a bit of a barge), I can make very rapid progress in that without the passenger side speed limiter getting ruffled (this is a horrid D car's best asset, IMO)

I ran a 535d sport for two years and it was an excellent family car with a very responsive engine. The newer 3.0l twin turbo d****l is even better as I have a 635d sport which I use for long business trips. I haven't driven the XF d****l but as I have only just entered into my 40's, I consider myself far too young wink

I am considering what to buy after just having sold my 4 year old DB9 and drove the XKR Supercharged this afternoon. The only thing that is wrong with that car is the old man image that Jag has. Otherwise it is pretty difficult to see why a new DB9 should be almost 50k more expensive than the Jag. I am not saying I am changing camps here but I think Jaguar are on to something with their range. Also the interior is pretty good. Touch screen DVD Sat Nav, B&W 500w surround, keyless go, active distance cruise control, ventilated heated and cooled seats and no Emotional whatever control. Pretty awesome 510 hp package which should give Aston something to think about. Still is it too old man?

I'm 35 this year.........

Anyways, the Jag is to be used for ferrying the family to in-laws - basically it needs to be long distance motorway cruiser. Performance will not be a priority.

I feel that having cars with contrasting characters will be ultimately more enjoyable and help me appreciate the qualities of both my motors. The civic is just too frenetic for me these days....

Question is, do i go for the older 2.7D and bag a bargain OR push the dealer on a good deal on the newer 3.0D?

Or as my wife suggested, sell both the Aston and the Civic and buy a Audi A6.... :x

There is of course the XFR, but she would kill me if I had two planet-killing cars on the go. God knows how I managed to marry an Eco-lefty smile

What ever you do, don't sell the Aston, you WILL regret it!

Have you cosidered the RRS TDV8?

PS

The XF V6 diesel twin turbo = 20 mpg
The BMW V6 diesel twin turbo = 37 mpg

The combined consumption on the diesel Xf is 37 mpg too! The new 3.0TT diesel achieves 45 mpg and shoves the XF to sixty in six secs - all without wifey noticing...

As for your suggestion on the Range Rover Sport - my Eco-wife would probably poison my supper and fellow Londeners will probably try and stone me to death!

I went for a Lexus RX300 to compliment the DB9 Volante - it's a great car but if the boss is an eco warrior what about the RX400 hybrid - 3.5 litre engine plus electric motors - it shifts, is a good cruiser and is silent in town plus the Lexus experience is second to non . There's a new model coming out in the next three months so you'll get a great deal .

I know this is probably a silly suggestion, but if I wanted something for the Mrs, that would make a good long distance cruiser with 4 seats, I'd be tempted by something like this (just examples, I'm not keen on the tip box or interiors!)....
http://usedcars.audi.co.uk/carview.aspx?id=6003799...
or
http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/auc/car_details/0,,1260...
Of course the 4.2 V8 S4 or BMW 335i M-sport tempted me, but the point is you could consider a more frugal engine (if you must!) but the soft top would add an element of fun, great on sunny weekend & the perfect complement to the AMV8 + still only a year old, £30K-ish & "practical" biggrin

Edited to add please ignore advice to buy a Softroader heap.. nearly as bad as carcinogenic diesels wink opinionated me never biggrin

The XF 3.0TT road test by Evo showed they got less that 20mpg combined!
The BMW 3.0TT states a combined of 40mpg but I get 37mpg.

It is also stated that the XF 3.0TT gets to 62mph quicker than the BMW, but that doesn't stack up as the XF is heavier with negligible torque difference.

Anyway, you are far too young to be owning an XF. My advice is a BMW 535d or 335d depending if you want a saloon or coupe. Audis are good cars but don't handle as well as the Beemers.

Decisions, decisions wink

Softroader heap ....I protest Sir - particularly as your suggestions would only appeal to a hairdresser and a commercial traveller ....where's your Aston breeding man !!

Said by the man who has a Boxster 2.5, Merc CLK convertible & a DB9 Volante in his current on-line stable.... & then adds a Lexus 4WD thingy for effect.... the tears are rolling down my cheeks roflroflrofl As ever each to his own & I respect your opinions about lardy 4WD heaps................ even if they are wrong biggrin

P.S. Not being derogatory about your fleet by the way, its very nice, just find your hairdresser jibe rather leaves one open to retortwink

Edited to add.... Incidentally if you have cabriolets on a ratio of 3-1 why is my gem like suggestion for StanW to get himself a great soft-top a bad idea confused You should know better than others the true benefit of having a rag top as part of your stable wink
I have always had coupes until recently & the Mrs has always had a soft-top, they have been the perfect combination for best family pleasurable driving enjoyment without a 4WD in sight thumbup
