Does anyone have any recommendations for good insurers ?

I'm currently with A Plan on the 911 and they are refusing to continue cover with the current insurer unless I get a tracker fitted (which I'm not keen to do) or will start a new policy but it's £450 more than the quote I've got on the net.........frown

Have to say very disappointed as when I took out the 911 policy there was no discount even though it had a tracker.......looks like both policies will have to go elsewhere now.

You could try speaking to these guys ....

http://www.oddiedalton.co.uk

They sorted insurance for my V8, GL and CL - all with Chubb.

I must admit that I thought Tracker (or equivalent) was pretty much essential for a decent quote with this class of car.

I think its just the insurers that are in the same group of companies as Tracker that always insist on them for £30K> cars ..and as loads of them are underwritten by the same people, just with a different front brand, its hard to get away from the "must have tracker"

anyway, I thought all V8s came with trackers as standard from the factory? ...or was it an option? I bouht my

Just found out the car does have a tracker just need to get it activated which is £225 per year but this might save me some hassles insurance wise.......

i'm with A-plan and my car doesn't have a tracker but because it's value is < 50k they said this isn't a problem. in fact, without the tracker the policy was only £54 more expensive so it wasn't worth while paying to get a tracker installed and then activated to save £54! i guess piece of mind could be worth it but i'm not so sure.

can anyone let me know if they think that their tracker is worth it?

I've had the tracker on the 911 ever since I've had it but never needed to use it......not certain it made insurance any easier or cheaper but guess there was always peace of mind if it did get stolen that they might be able to recover it.......

To confirm, you have an AMV8 insured with APlan, value less than £50K, and they insure it without a Tracker? Can I ask who the underwriter is?

I'm with APlan on my current Box, recorded value about £36K and I don't need a Tracker. I'm hoping that the same will be true of the AM - value about £45K (assuming all goes well on Wednesday!).

Personally if my car is swiped I really don't want it recovered so I'd always go for the non-Tracker option if it's available.

i'll have to double check when i get home but i believe the underwriter is Norwich Union. When i bought the car i got given a business card for Aplan private customer team, so don't know if that's different from the general A-plan but it certainly makes me feel special.biggrin

i can dig the number out for you if you want.

Great, I hope so as my current Aplan policy on the Boxster is underwritten by NU. Hopefully I won't have to fit a Tracker when (if) I get the AM.

lifetime Tracker is the best deal (if there is such a thing, for what is essentially you paying extra to insure your insurers against a loss !) - about £300 lifetime membership

I dont understand why manufacturers of >£50K cars which are tough to insure without a Tracker, dont just fit them as standard, and pay the bleedin £300, then its done with - as an owner all you do is update the address it when you buy and sell the car...if its so good then make it law to fit one FFS

Try Footman James. I have all my cars insured with them for around 1,700 quid a year.

Bogie - where do you get lifetime tracking for 300 quid from?

I have decided to have the tracker activated and stay with the current insurer as the premoum increase between now and May was only £35 smile

When the invoice comes in will check for 2/3 year or lifetime deals.

from Tracker themselves, just ring them up ...its transferrable too, so can be transferred when sold on to the new owner, I have it on mine

I'm afraid not - whilst you can transfer the ownership of the tracker unit (as it stays fixed in the car) you can't transfer the subscription. The one-off subscription is only for the duration of ownership.

Whilst I've had a Tracker before and have a Tracker Horizon fitted to my current 911 I wouldn't bother again. My insurance company, Admiral, didn't require a Tracker to be fitted when I insured the 911 with them and offered no discount - even though the car was then valued at £65K+ (somewhat less now two years later!). I've since let the annual subscription lapse without renewing.

Personally if my car was stolen then I'd rather not have it recovered. I'd rather claim on my insurance for market value, claim on my GAP insurance for the difference and then buy a new car!

Simon.

maybe id better read the small print then ! ...oh well...I dont usually have them on my cars either for the reasons mentioned - I mean your insurance still goes up just because of the hassle of attempted theft and all that, so the benefit of a tracker is that they save insurers money frown

the only worthwhile application I can think of for myself, would be a heavily modded one-off kind of project car, where its irreplaceble.

How much does GAP insurance cost, and how does it work?

Do you just insure for a set amount (say 20k) to act as a top up for whatever the insurance company give you on your car?

GAP will cover the difference between the price the insurance company say the car is worth and the amount you paid, usually up to a limit (for mine I think it is around £25k)

Can't remember how much it was for the most recent car but I'd never be without it after totalling an XKR after 4 months - insurance offered £35k and the GAP covered the remaining £12k!!!

If you have a recent quote reasomably handy it'd be interesting to see how much it is...

When I bought my V8 Vantage in May this year the normal price of the GAP insurance was £300. The dealer (Lancaster Cambridge) was happy to discount this to £150. Given the fall in value of the car since I bought it this now looks like very good value.
